Ke Huy Quan and the steps to "Everything Everywhere All at Once"

"Written for me" (link directs you to a CBC Radio interview on Q, with Tom Power): it was a long journey from his roles in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and The Goonies, but Ke Huy Quan's appearance in Everything Everywhere All at Once (previously) is a cosmically satisfying development. Stick around for a discussion on DALL-E 2 (previously)

Appears to be off limits in the US; I'm getting a "content not available in your location" error down here in Florida. [EDIT] The individual segment works for me, link here.

Quan is extraordinarily good in this movie. He and Michelle Yeoh should absolutely be racking up nominations come awards season.

What a treat that we get to enjoy his prodigious talents again, and what a disgusting shame that so many artists of his caliber have been driven from this and other professions for similar reasons over the years.

Oh man, I saw the movie and really liked it and I had no idea that was Short Round

Giving a shout to the still-active fanfare thread.

GQ: The Many Lives of Ke Huy Quan
- this was one of the earlier profiles on him back when the movie was on limited release. I really liked it.

Vulture.com story as well.

I was really impressed with the Wong Kar Wai-esque scenes in EEAAW. He and Michelle Yeoh were amazing, and I could watch way too much of that.

I loved the movie and was astounded at his performance -- funny, true, sincere, moving, even elegant. I think it's one of my favorite movie performances ever. Just lovely. (Which of course is helped by a magnificent script and direction, and equally compelling performances from his costars.)

Commenting before reading any of the links to say you should see Everything Everywhere All at Once multiple times as soon as possible.

Okay, time for me to read the links.

The movie has joined Princess Bride and The Big Lebowski in my short list of perfect movies, and the casting is impeccable. He’s great, Yeoh is great, and Jamie Lee Curtis is extraordinary.

The last movie I saw in the theater before seeing Everything Everywhere All At Once over this past weekend was in November 2019. The first time I saw the trailer I knew this was going to be the movie that broke my pandemic streak and got me back into a movie house.

It’s extraordinary and I am so happy it was my first movie back.

He was so incredibly good in EEAO.. I can't wait to see him act more, just incredibly skilled. And he seems so just genuinely happy and joyful to be where he is in his career now. Very wholesome!!

Side note: I've been noticing and appreciating that we may finally be turning a corner on Asian American artists using their given names professionally. It's so overdue but great that he doesn't feel pressured to keep using Jonathan anymore.

Thanks! Here's the DALL-E bit from the same site (10:27 long).

Tangentially, some of you might find this short film interesting:

Searching for Short Round

Thirty-five years after a fateful audition, one man goes in search of all the men who, as boys, auditioned to be Short Round in Steven Spielberg’s Indiana Jones and the Temple Of Doom.

I am absolutely terrible at keeping track of actors (and also at recognizing even the actors I know. Made it through the entire movie without clocking JLC) so I was very surprised he hasn’t been working in movies all along. He has a real movie-star presence: that instant transition from beaten-down kindly schmuck to glamorous action hero is the kind of thing I associate with big stars.

Just thanking you for posting that gracious interview with Ke Huy.

Hearing him become emotional about how much he loves filmmaking -- and how Othered he felt by Hollywood in the prime of his life -- is something more people with decision-making power in the industry should be cognizant of, and willing to buck up against in order to bring better stories (and a wider range of talent) to the screen. I loved him SO much as a child, and was sorry to see him disappear after such a seemingly short movie career.

Audiences are hungry for better, more creative storytelling in these depressing times. Or maybe that's just me?

I miss the good old days of people taking COVID seriously, when movies would go to streaming while they were still in the public consciousness.
