Prince Paul’s 10 Favorite Sample Flips
A little context: Prince Paul is considered one of the greatest hip-hop producers of all time.

Trippin Out had a Heatwave sample from that same song (The Star of a Story). The Jeru sample was kind of unimpressive. I was already just kind of so-so on the rest of the chosen examples, and then I came across a Nelly track. Ugh. And then the Wu sample made me realize holy shit, they really are nothing to fuck with. Shook Ones was impressive too though.

Really? It's one of my all-time fave beats and I don't think I would ever have thought to use that sample in a track.
I don't know about top 10, but The Juggaknots use of John Coltrane's My Favorite Things deserves honorable mention.

"Wu-Tang Clan Ain’t Nuthin’ Ta F’ Wit" is built on an Underdog sample? That is hilarious.

WhoSampled.com is probably the best source for finding interesting samples and sample chains, by the way. I've lost several hours just poking around it.

I had thought that the finger snaps on that song came from West Side Story, but the internet doesn't agree with me.

Every time we have a "listen to these amazing samples" thread on MeFi, I remember that my fondest dream of what I would do on the Internet, given my druthers, is a sample-connections blog. But places like whosampled.com have done all the real work. The territory is well trod, by smarter and more credentialed people than me.
Still love these threads/links though. Re: that Jeru sample -- a lotta good performers went on to sample that Jeru song, too. I've always been fond of the Dilated Peoples song The Platform. Babu was still putting together rich, sample-based beats way after it fell out of fashion.

This is blowing my mind, because of how all over the place, yet completely right on Prince Paul's choices are. Jeru, Dre, the Wu and then Paul Barman? They couldn't be more different, but every track is first class sick.
I think the first two Jeru tha Damaja, "The Sun Rises in the East" and "Wrath of the Math" are two of the most slept on hip-hop classics .

The wu-tang/underdog one is incredible, so inventive. To me it so perfectly conjures something very precise that was wu's dark and mysterious image. I just love it when finding out about a sample's origin gives so much more depth to a track.

unexpectedly? that actually was one of my least favorite tracks on that album, but it's still great.
