Season 2 of Marvel's "Daredevil" is nearly upon us. Here's are two glimpses of what's in store, one featuring the Punisher, and the other spotlighting Elektra.

Y'know, given how much Thomas Jane liked being the Punisher, I always wonder if he sees this stuff and heaves a heavy sigh, the piano theme from The Incredible Hulk inexplicably playing in the background for some reason.

A Daredevil story without ninjas is barely a Daredevil story at all. We've seen Stick, Nobu, and Stick's organization and boss (who people have guessed is Stone from the comics). Nobu was dressed like the Hand ninjas. My guess is that the Black Sky group will end up being the Hand, since that's who Stick and Stone are always going up against.
So yeah, ninjas, ninjas, everywhere. Elektra will fit in fine.

I think Elektra will fit and and I like the Punisher as a character who pushes on the tension of Matt's vigilante/lawyer dynamic, but it does seem like a lot for one season. My guess is that Elektra's role is limited to an episode or two arc, but I could be wrong.
Sidenote: Are there good Elektra stories? I mostly know her from the Daredevil: The Man Without Fear miniseries, where I found her presentation not great for sexism reasons.

Well, the trailer(s) worked on me. I was pretty indifferent to Daredevil season 1, and I say this as a Marvel aficionado and Jessica Jones fan, but now I'm seeing a binge watch in my future so I can catch up before Season 2 starts. Because Elektra and Punisher. And The Hand.

It does seem like a lot (I'd imagine having either an Elektra+Ninja or a Punisher storyline), but season one was so good that I'm willing to give the creative team the benefit of the doubt.

I think that season 1 was great, and the showrunners really seemed to get what made/makes Daredevil so powerful as a story. I'm a little nervous about this Punisher, just because I don't think anything can beat this Thomas Jane fan made short film.
But I like the DD/Pun setup I've seen here.

My like of the first Daredevil season is only tempered a bit by how much more I liked Jessica Jones. The first DD season seemed a little tentative and had too much origin story while JJ just dumped you right into the middle of the story and didn't really slow down to wait for you to catch up.

This is just one guy's opinion, but: no, not really. I don't think I've ever seen the character used in a way where I thought the story wouldn't be better off without her, and I'm pretty unhappy that the creators of the show felt the need to include her. Maybe the showrunners here have figured out how to make her compelling, but I'm not optimistic. Mostly I'm hoping she's not present for many episodes.

Elektra:Assassin is the best of the bunch, I'd say. Bill Sienkiewicz's art lifts Miller's script to a much higher level than the book would have achieved otherwise. Some fairly barbed satire ensues.

Are there good Elektra stories?
Greg Rucka, who is generally one of the better action/thriller writers in comics. Don't be put off by the cover, or the fact that Chuck Austen is involved.

It seemed from the trailer that Elektra and DD hadn't met before, which would remove pretty much the entire reason for including Elektra in a Daredevil show. Maybe I read too much into this?

The issues in that collection are all also in Marvel Unlimited. The description for that collection doesn't mention Bendis who wrote at least the first issue so I dunno if that's bad Amazon data or if it's not the full run.

It is super disappointing that they didn't decide to cast an Asian actor.

Also, in the trailer, she's sitting there in a chair, addresses him by hist first name, and he says something about respecting his privacy. That definitely seemed familiar.

Yeah, I would have liked that. As Nerds of Color pointed out, it really only makes the story better by getting rid of the White Savior issue. I like Iron Fist, FInn Jones is a fine casting choice if they had to go with a white guy, and I'm looking forward to it, but it's a shame

It's pretty much a Miller comic brought to screen and therefore has Ninjas all over the damn place. Characters are basically more likely to be some kind of ninja than not, probably they need to find a deal with FOX to license Wolverine so he can clear out all the damn ninjas.

Yeah, but now they have a white guy acting out Asian stereotypes while beating up other Asian stereotypes. They might not be able to win, but they could stand to lose less.

It's okay, they can balance it out by casting Misty Knight and race-bend Colleen Wing. Or add in Jimmy Woo (because I REALLY want to see Agents of ATLAS).
But then make the villain Egg-Fu*.... or Fing Fang Foom.
It will all balance out into an all-mighty melting pot of racial fondue that leaves no one happy.
(*Voiced by the Last Samurai himself, Tom Cruise. Also, Egg-Fu might be DC. I can't keep up with the evil eggs).

This spoiler-free Daredevil season 2 review is based on the first seven episodes.
I'm down. I mean, I was anyway, but it has a hell of a lot to live up to.

Marvel's obsession with plastering Asian martial arts skills/weaponry on white characters to make them cooler (Daredevil, Iron Fist, Wolverine, Kitty Pryde for a while, that whole clusterfuck that is Psylocke, Deadpool, even Spider-Man in one recent subplot) is one of my least favorite things about it. As much as I enjoyed Daredevil season 1, its treatment of Asian characters was poor and I am very skeptical about season 2 and Iron Fist.
The Iron Fist concept is steeped in colonialism/orientalism but if you're going to go there (tbh I saw no pressing need -- Luke's association with Jess is more important to the modern version of the character than Danny is), an Asian American Danny is ripe for exploring so many aspects of cultural identity -- the divergence between "home" culture and the one shaped by diaspora, the reclamation of parts of your heritage that got assimilated away, the reality that PoC Americans are not exempt from imperialism, the debunking of the Asian monolith. Lots of potential there for stuff that's almost never shown on TV at all let alone in genre shows, but instead they went with the dated, lazy option.
I don't see this as a can't-win scenario at all. 1) Marvel created this problem for themselves by deciding to make a show about Iron Fist versus any number of other candidates; 2) as dinty_moore pointed out, Asian American Danny may not be perfect but he's light years better than White Danny almost no matter what; 3) obviously someone would complain no matter how Asian American Danny was handled because, shockingly, Asian Americans are not a hive mind, but that's not an excuse to throw up one's hands and not even try to do better.
It's okay, they can balance it out by casting Misty Knight and race-bend Colleen Wing.
Colleen is already Japanese/white (and raised in Japan), so she definitely should not be racebent. I'm kind of bummed out Jimmy Woo never showed in Agent Carter, though, especially with season 2 set in LA.

I had no idea (really, my comics from that era are B&W reprints), but given Claremont.... I am not surprised.

Miller got the writing gig on Daredevil and I think within his first issue had Kingpin sparring with ninjas in a dojo. Miller's big influence there was Lone Wolf and Cub, which he was a big fan of.

Lots of people have told me to watch The Raid.
I just haven't done so yet.
I have 24 hours or so before Daredevil, maybe I should give that Dredd knock-off a fair shake.

I admit, I am baffled at the whole Dredd "pretty dull and barely got through it" (I am a Dredd fan from yore, my friend was not, and we both loved it), but everything I have heard about The Raid sounds like it is the same vague idea but with very difference executions.

Guys, Die Hard exists, no need to fight.
Die Hard did not age well. Or rather did not age in the manner I expected. At the time it was The Greatest Action Movie of All Time to me, and now its value is as the Platonic Ideal of '80s action camp.
Granted I was a kid at the time, but hoo boy did I not see how goddamn goofy that film is.

I've seen the first two and I'm pretty sure he meant guns == bad. NOT REALLY SPOILERS BUT THEMATIC STUFF, SO KINDA: The Punisher is portrayed as having a somewhat sympathetic moral code but is otherwise regarded unequivocally as a threat and a possible indictment of what must follow naturally from someone like Daredevil being embraced by the public.
