Modernity has failed us

We raise children in safe cheerful cocoons, and sometime in adolescence or early adulthood they begin to figure out how the world really is. It is not fair to mock them for acting as if it were shocking news. It is, to them, because we lied to them. Probably we should stop, and let them know when they are toddlers that we are parts of a runaway machine. I don't know if I could bear to do that, though, were I be given another child to raise.

Pretending for the sake of the little one that the wheels haven't already come off and we're not careening towards a future that will make the misery of the past few decades seem blissful in comparison takes a great deal of my energy. I constantly feel death tugging at my sleeve telling me that Instead of music and dance I should be teaching them to move silently and hide in shadows. How though, when something as simple as a squeaky crab toy will still make them laugh?

Still, I, too, would love it if we made it. Is it unfair to hold out hope that the world won't snuff out that smile and laugh?

thank you kanye, very cool.

The great beast is wheezing its death and our job now is to figure out what kind of house we can build of its bones.
