Ever felt the need to listen to a piano cover of contemporary hits such as Daft Punk, Justice , the Pixies and Fatboy Slim while watching women dancing in black and white? Well Maxen Cecyrin will fulfil your strangely specific desire. (warning: slightly addictive)

It's been a while since I've watched a video and been so into it. It is simply mesmerizing!

The fact that a lot of these are all party hits and sound really creepy and somewhat like a Philip Glass piece on piano is somewhat interesting. Problem: it felt weird to me once they got to the chorus. I think that they almost work in the introduction stuff, but the more it sounds like the songs that it comes from the more gimmicky and less essential it sounds.

But the videos that they chose to go with these tracks are fucking great.

I liked that about a thousand times more than I expected to.

I love, love, LOVE piano covers of popular tunes, so thank you for this post. The Pixies one was luscious!

Correction: His name is Maxence Cyrin, not Maxen Cecyrin.

But he's amazing!

The Pixies one just about broke my heart. I want to hear a full-on orchestral version now.

I loved the old-time Busby Berkley visuals over the Daft Punk tune. It just seems to fit somehow. I also liked the musical version of it he performed far better than the original.
Really good stuff.

Dammit, well spotted a sourceless light. If there any mods who wander in could they fix it? Cheers!

I agree that the Pixie's Where is My Mind is heartbreaking. First I am going to cry, then I will journal my feelings, then I will buy every piece of Maxen Cecyrin's work.

Fucking awesome post.

This makes me sad I never learned to play an instrument. Awesome. A little more gin and some of these are going to make me cry.

Good stuff, but there is one note painfully wrong in that fatboy slim track!

If I could have had any parents other than my own, truly excellent and much missed parents, my choice would be Garbo and Frank Black. That one was particularly poignant, I think, and not just for me. Is that Anna Karenina? Probably not, but that's what I thought it was while I was watching. Never finished it, but I can see how it fits.

Ever felt the need to listen to a piano cover of contemporary hits ... while watching women dancing in black and white?

I'm not being facetious: I have felt that need. Thanks.

I've loved this guy since I stumbled upon "Don't you want me" on the Faithless "Renaissance 3D" album.

Really beautiful stuff that makes me ache to be able to play the piano anything...

Where is My Mind, Vitamin String Quartet doesn't have the great B&W film but it's another option. I love piano and string covers.

This seems as good a place as any to drop a link I've been saving for a while: German youth choir covers Guided by Voices' "Goldheart Mountaintop Queen Directory." Who knew that GBV, of all bands, would lend itself to such an arrangement, but it's just beautiful.

The Daft Punk by way of Busby Berkeley gave me flashbacks to synchronized swimming at summer camp when I was little.

Thanks for posting this. He is mesmerizing. He turns pop songs into classical ballads. I'm going to watch out for his stuff. I really enjoyed listening to the songs I heard through this post. Cheers

It was the Depeche Mode cover that sealed the deal for me.

On a related note, I've been a huge fan of the Rockabye Baby series, which reinterprets rock and alternative music as lullabies. I'm particularly fond of the Radiohead album. Knives Out on Glockenspiel is pretty awesome, but it's tracks like Everything In Its Right Place and Sail To The Moon that remind me of Maxence Cyrin.

I didn't. Now that I know what I'm missing, that need will be visiting me from time to time. My day just got a little bit better for having seen those - thanks.

All this talk about Where Is My Mind makes me think—

Facts:

Fight Club came out in 1999.
Surfer Rosa came out in in 1988.

Calculations:

1999 – 1988 = 11 years.
2010 – 1999 = 11 years.

Conclusion:

I feel older than I should because a movie I saw when I was in high school used a song that came out when I was barely in elementary school, and high schoolers today were barely in elementary school when that movie came out.

Along those (admittedly quite derailed) lines, you know what blows me away? Dazed and Confused (1993) takes place in 1976. 1993-1976=17. 2010-1993=17. WTF???
