This is My Story: Part One, Part Two. (youtube videos) Ben Breedlove passed away on December 25, 2011. (Last link contains autoplaying video)

Breedlove was a Texas teen with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. The two videos posted above are his last, uploaded a week before he died.

He ran the popular OurAdvice4You and Breedlove TV channels on YouTube. The first featured him giving out relationship advice to his viewers. He would also interview family members and friends. The latter channel has videos of him answering questions about dating, relationships and advice. (via)

Sorry for the moderate derail, but what's the meme of people writing things on cards rather than just talking, on YouTube? Where did it start, and why do people do it?

I've always believed that young adults, in that time space between high-school and college, making the transition from boys and girls to men and women, are simply the best of our species. They still have that wide-eyed wonder and enthusiasm for life, they don't have that anger, bitterness, fear or cynicism that develops later on in adulthood, and they foster a healthy respect for those who look different or have different philosophies than them.

Here's to you Ben Breedlove, for making this world a bit better before you left it.

Those videos are pretty great, thanks. According to the local paper, his friends and family didn't find them until after he died.

pomegranate: "Where did it start, and why do people do it?"

Weren't there a few music videos in the 80s that did this?

I've seen the writing on cards thing more with teens, and I wonder if it's a way to have some privacy from one's parents when recording something for YouTube. Historically - Yes Bob Dylan, yes INXS, too. And of course the 99% movement lately has generated tons of photos.
His cards and smile communicate just as well as his spoken videos.
So sorry for his family, and at the same time, what an amazing and heartening gift his last videos are. Old soul for sure.

Good lord. The problem with the cards is that my eyes are so full of tears I can barely read them. Thanks for giving something to think about as we move into this next year. Life is precious, and the lives of those we love are the most precious of all. I'm going to hug my daughter extra tight when I get home today.

He was very handsome and what a fantastic smile.... it is not surprising that this touches people.

I hope that same peace he found before followed through to this last time.
I cried the whole way through. It wasn't just sad, it was so much more than that. I was sorry for him and happy for him and mad that he had to die and angry that his parents lost a son. and I know he's braver than I could ever be.
ALL of the feelings
