The Boing Boing write up provides some nice context and a download link, but if you're not going to take the 30-45 minutes to try it yourself, you should at least read something like this kotaku write up (NB: The headline is NSFW, but basically nothing else is), or watch the Game Grumps playthrough of the whole thing (lasts about half an hour, there's swearing/juvenile humor but nothing beyond the pale).

Video games were weird as heck this week for other reasons, but this can't really be topped in terms of weirdness.

Also, if you have the Unity plugin installed still (browsers are generally going to drop support for an API or whatever that it depends on soon but for now it still works)... The previous project from Arcane Kids is Bubsy 3D: Bubsy Visits The James Turrell Retrospective, in which a version of Bubsy goes to an art museum. And then to hell.

Lastly, there was a little bit of controversy over this release. Someone who worked on an older version of Sonic Movie Maker wrote a fairly alarming letter about the treatment of people of color and their work in the community this project sprang from. Arcane Kids issued an apology the following day.

"what have you fucking brought to the world?" seems like an accurate sentiment.

Time for lunch!

  1. The URL for downloading the Sonic Dreams collection is http://hedgehog.exposed/
  2. One of members of Arcane Kids is David O'Reilly, responsible for the surreal & horrible & compelling animation The External World, and the surreal & pretty & compelling, non-interactive god-game Mountain. (It’s sort of like Neko Atsume, but with a mountain that does stuff instead of cats, and no feeding.)

Someone I watch sometimes who streams a lot of video game corruptions and other weird stuff got flooded with requests to play this. Watch his descent into madness (unlike the game grumps playthrough this shows Eggman Origins).

If you want to buy the soundtrack to your Sonic-related nightmares, it is now up on Bandcamp.

Griffin McElroy and Nick-who-also-works-at-Polygon have a Let’s Play up, though they have yet to get to the multiplayer level. Hopefully it’ll be up soon…

sparkletone, the first half of that video is the standard crapplay that's so obnoxiously popular on YouTube right now, where someone who thinks they can riff on things makes stupid wisecracks, and reads off all the lines in the sarcastic textbook, and I clicked that off.

Then I came back and I'm glad I did, because his reactions to My Roommate Sonic transcend genre. I don't know if he actually was as profoundly unnerved as he seemed to be (actually there's no way he could have been and have been able to alt-tab open that little window showing his face), but it was funny anyway.

Of course, that's why these crapplays are popular. Most of them are guys effectively trying to say WTF in increasingly loud and baroque ways. People in real life, exposed to something like Sonic Dreams, would be just silently aghast. There is money, it seems, in being loudly and realistically unnerved by something.

It probably plays differently to me with the added context of having watched a bunch of Vinny's other stuff, but also keep in mind that video is basically a raw upload of a Twitch stream VOD. He's interacting with a chat that isn't displayed on screen his case. Some streamers have it onscreen, others don't. Honestly, while I like Vinny quite a lot, the chat for his stream can get pretty awful in the typical "gamers are garbage" ways, so I'm fine with him not having that up. But he isn't just talking to himself/reacting for the sake of a video, he's talking to a couple thousand people who are watching him live.

Not saying your complaint is invalid or anything, just why that line of thought didn't occur to me. The main reason I liked it is it shows off a chunk of the collection that a lot of the videos I've seen skip over (Eggman Origins).

Understandable, and understood. I think I've seen one or two of his videos before, corruption ones. Did he do a Super Mario Bros corruption a while back?
