One way to destroy a country is to make lists.
I like lists; they are a tool for order and security. I'm a reference librarian, but, if I didn't like people as much as I do, I could have become an archivist or a records manager. It's important to remember that lists are not neutral, and sometimes order and security comes from destroying and denying lists.
The only thing citizens have that stands between them and an autocrat, it seems, are lawyers.
The world owes a lot to lawyers.

Thanks for sharing this. I've been trying to understand what's been going on in Turkey and this helped a lot. Part of me wishes I didn't know, but I wish that about a lot of things these days.

It's hard to believe that not so long ago, Turkey was seriously expected to join the EU.

Did anyone else, when they saw, "You are accused of attempting to kill President Erdogan," think "Worst Infocom game ever"?

TL;DR close enough that the opposition will question the result, but Erdoğan says it's a clear win, and the priority now is to bring back the death penalty.

The map of yes vs no is interesting and depressing. Compare to population density.

One great irony of all this is that I am sure Erdogan, besides suppressing democracy and the rule of law and acting like a tyrant generally, has created lots of new enemies who look forward to dancing on his grave someday.
