I was going to say that the "What is Nyan Cat" link at the bottom didn't shed a lot of light on this. But, upon reflection, I guess it isn't the what? that perplexes me anywhere nearly as much as the why?

great concept, horrible execution. you can't make a u-turn without running into your own tail, and i felt like a disproportionate amount of cherries were appearing where my tail was in early levels.

on preview, .kobayashi, are you serious? I couldn't think of a place better to explain it than know your meme...

Seconding the horrible execution bit, in both egregious and subtle ways. As a game designer I feel somewhat compelled to do a better job of it, perhaps even by just reskinning one of my existing games.

Totally serious. They've carefully documented the appearances of this cat made out of pastry, which prancing through space while pooping rainbows. But that doesn't help me to understand it in the least.

To be fair, I kind of feel this way about much of the Internet.

Snake is really kind of a stupid game.

I am kind of impressed, sort of works on iOS. Way to go HTML 5.

You take that back you slimy mammal!

No man, you got me totally wrong. Snakes are awesome. They deserve a better game than Snake.

When you eat a cherry, the tail immediately grows back from its tip, which I don't think is canonical snake behavior, is it? I thought the end of the tail should pause until the head has moved the length of the new growth.

The U-turn behavior was surprising at first, but you just adjust the timing and you're golden.

Nyan cat is like most things on the Internet. It is a confluence of various parts, gathered and assembled that somehow make up an magical whole.

First there was the song Nyanyanyanyanyanyanya that features vocaloid Htsune Miku.

Then there was a remix of the song using a voice synthesizer with the Momone Momo voice that added the nyan lyrics.

A gif of a cat with a pop tart body somehow popped up because a guy was taking drawing requests online and people kept asking for drawings of cats and pop tarts so he just drew one drawing that contained both. He called it Pop Tart Cat.

How it all got added together is the magical part. The gif got mashed up with the song and uploaded to YouTube titled "nyan cat" and we are left with the pinnacle of 21st century culture, Nyan Cat. A "crowdsourced" work of art with no definite purpose or meaning combining disparate elements harvested from the Internet.

I was really thinking this would be something more along the lines of "nyancat centipede." Probably the world is better off that I was wrong.

The tune is a work of minimalistic genius: Just a 4 second prelude, then the same 27 seconds over and over again. It's hard to make a earworm in that form.

Yeah, but scoring is poorly thought out. It's 1 point per cherry eaten per second survived. If a high score is the objective (it's the only one offered), then it's best to eat a few cherries then circle forever. Traditional Snake, I think, scores purely on objects eaten.

(I do have to admit though, I like the smoothness of the rainbow effect. I'm sure some effort went into that, so admire it everyone!)

kind of like the prelude and then the endlessly repeating nyan

Now that there is Human Centipede 2, its only a matter of time 'till someone takes nyancat + other meme's, places them head to tail and makes the "nyancat centipede."

As a concept, this is great. As an execution of Snake, it's totally maddening. It's like maneuvering a rainbow-belching cube van around the screen.

Challenge: modify the Tron arcade ROM so the light cycles game features Nyan cat as one of the enemies.

I can't actually recall the Nyan Cat music at all; it only takes a few minutes to disappear from my brain, possibly because I never bothered with one of those marathon sessions that people seem to find so appealing for reasons I fail to grasp.

This and this, on the other hand, have stuck with me for a very long time.

I didn't properly hover over flabdablet's first link and clicked it. The moment the page appeared, I saw the word "badgers", yelled OH GOD NO, and went to hit back before the flash could load.

I heard only "Badger badger badg--" and that gorram song is stuck in my head. So thanks.

A kid I knew in HS once ran Badger Badger Badger in the background for a few hours while he was at his desk. For reasons I cannot imagine. It apparently doesn't sync right and the sound goes totally off after a while.
