Disney has to depict Gaston as a completely unlikeable jackass because if they don't, you're going to notice that the hero of this story isn't the guy who imprisons a woman until she loves him, it's the people whose response to that is "fuck it, torches and pitchforks party at the monster's castle, BYOB".
