He picked up mad rhymes at the Penington School

If you're a fan of Star Trek, you likely already know of The AV Club's reviews, currently focusing on Deep Space Nine. But perhaps you have missed, throughout the comment threads for each review, the poetic stylings of Rappin_Jake_Sisko. (Last link is an anthology, with annotations.)

Also make sure you don't miss the epic Rap Battle between Rappin_Jake_Sisko and Tumak, which occurred in May 2012. Tumak introduces himself here. The battle is planned in that comment thread, and then is held in the next week's review thread, beginning here.

For the annotated version of the battle, start here. The battle-rhymes are posted in order, to use "newer post" to get to the next one.

I'm having a hard time navigating this site because I have never used it before. I'm only on season 3 right now (ep 11 on the other monitor as I type this). Is there a table of contents?

This is what Metafilter is for.

Also what AVClub is for.

This post doesn't say, and to click the links would ruin my mental image, but Tumak had better be an ancient Vulcan beatboxer.

Edgewise, what I meant was that one thing Metafilter does well is calling attention to interesting things that are ludicrously obscure.

Can we work this into LARP Trek?

I somehow missed the DS9 reviews. And now I have a lot of reading to catch up on!

For people who don't know Deep Space Nine, here's six minutes on the theme of compromised idealism.

While we're on the topic of Star Trek raps: Data raps (Ode to Spot)

Wow, I totally hear these in DOOM's voice. Maybe it's because he drops so many Star Trek references in his own raps?

rebent, which site do you want a table of contents for? The Annotated Jake Sisko blog only has the regular archive-by-month format, so far as I can tell.

Oh, this is great! Random thoughts on reading these:

- I will admit it: I have always liked Lwaxana Troi. She's like Auntie Mame.

- I completely despise mirror-universe episodes at this point. I didn't even like the one in TOS. It's just a silly premise – an alternate universe where everybody is evil, or mean, or something? I mean, Star Trek had some silly premises, but this is very silly.

- "Hard Time" is easily one of the best episodes of DS9, if not the very best. Damn, that was good television.

Unmentioned in the thread but highly appreciated by me is the fact that the Annotator's username on Blogger appears to be Mr. Atoz, the time librarian from the TOS episode All Our Yesterdays.

Not sure why this is a problem; if you replace "mean" or "evil" with "thoroughly socialized in a polticial system where nice guys finish last", then it makes perfect sense. It's What If the Federation belonged to a society that was more like the Klingons than the Federation.

Reading these makes me realize I'm not nearly as much of an encyclopedic DS9 nerd as I thought I was.
