Boring day job? Watch a grizzly bear hunt for salmon at Brooks Falls or the Lower Brooks River in Katmai National Park, Alaska.
Bears aren't your thing? Explore.org also hosts puffin cams, bison cams, kitten cams, puppy cams, panda cams, penguin cams, ocean cams, beluga cams, a shot of the northern lights, and many more cams.

Also here is a great blog post about some of the bears in the park; I was particularly interested to read this as I have been worrying a little bit about the injured bear they mention at the end of the article, #469.

I'd forgotten how much of the grizzly's hunting method is "sit here in water and wait for fish to jump in mouth."

The bears are rarely up and about before noonish as they are lazy snoozers so if you tune in at 9am or so there are teeming hordes of salmon just leaping everywhere. I sit and yell at the cameras WAKE UP YOU LAZY BEARS BREAKFAST IS GETTING AWAY but they never listen.

The salmon are all online looking at the live cam: "Fu-u-u-u-c-k, man; that's a lot of bears. Better keep our heads down." Meanwhile the bears are all "hey, let's pretend we're humping and see if the salmon try to sneak past while we're otherwise occupied?" "Oh, yeah, sure. Let's 'pretend' we're humping. You tried that one on me last year, Maurice." "No, for reals, it'll work, one...two...hups-a-daisy!" "WHAT? Get the fuck off me, Maurice! I am NOT your hump-buddy, o.k.? God. You're such a dick, sometimes. Fuck it, I'm out of here."

Alas, work filters prevent me from watching this, but...
I'm still basking from my visit this weekend to the Buffalo Zoo, where they had TWO, count 'em, TWO bebbeh polar bears. They would chase each other and they would playfight and they would playfight in the water and the one would suck his thumb and the one would hide in the shelter and the other would jump on top of the shelter and surprise the first one and the first one would come out all surprised and mad but you could tell it was all an act and then they would playfight some more and then get all tuckered out and sit down and their little bumbums would get all dirty so they would go swimming again and playfight again and it was AWESOME.
In summary: bebbeh polar bears.

mygothlaundry, that reminds me of another animal that was laying down.
I had taken my two boys to the local zoo. It was getting near closing time when we passed by the elephant enclosure. This one elephant was laying down, on his side. The other two elephants seemed concerned as they were prodding him with their trunks. After about five minutes of watching them, it was apparent the two elephants were not giving up their efforts to help this one elephant to his feet. We walked around until we found one of the zoo staff. My boys told the zoo keeper about the elephant just laying there and how we were worried about him. The zoo keeper started walking towards the elephant enclosure at a fast clip. As we all cleared the trees and had a full view of the elephant laying down, the zoo keeper started laughing. He told my boys that the elephant on the ground had been the elephant ride that day and he is just tired. The zoo keeper was very nice to us and thanked my boys for being concerned about the elephant and getting him help.
Maybe he is just tired from fishing all day.

It is interesting that the bears have their hierarchy in that each bear knows to not poach a more senior bear's place at the falls. You may be scolding a younger bear for fishing in a bad spot, but he knows not to risk an ass-kicking.

elizardbits: The bears are rarely up and about before noonish as they are lazy snoozers so if you tune in at 9am or so there are teeming hordes of salmon just leaping everywhere. I sit and yell at the cameras WAKE UP YOU LAZY BEARS BREAKFAST IS GETTING AWAY but they never listen.
Hmm, three up at 7am.

That's 4 bears, chris.
(There are 6 bears on cam now, there were 7 until a moment ago when one caught a fish and wandered off to rend its still living flesh.)

I can't stop watching this, which is bad considering how much daylight there is in Alaska this time of year.

They're pretty much in the same spot they were yesterday, including that one guy at the bottom of the screen who basically just sits there. It reminds me of Sam and Ralph from the Looney Tunes cartoon, just clocking in for another day of nature's drudgery.
(Six bears, at the moment.)

Drudgery? If I could hang out in the water while food literally hurled itself into my mouth, I'd just do that forever. Pretty sweet gig, bearing.

Here is the top comment on the linked page (by Buffy • 3 months ago):
The National Park Rangers are advising hikers in Katmai National Park and other Aniakchak National Parks to be alert for bears and take extra precautions to avoid an encounter.posted by dougzilla at 7:14 PM on July 16, 2013
They advise park visitors to wear little bells on their clothes so they make noise when hiking. The bell noise allows bears to hear them coming from a distance and not be startled by a hiker accidentally sneaking up on them. This might cause a bear to charge.
Visitors should also carry a pepper spray can just in case a bear is encountered. Spraying the pepper into the air will irritate the bear's sensitive nose and it will run away.
It is also a good idea to keep an eye out for fresh bear scat so you have an idea if bears are in the area. People should be able to recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear scat.
Black bear droppings are smaller and often contain berries, leaves, and possibly bits of fur. Grizzly bear droppings tend to contain small bells and smell of pepper.
A mama bear just showed up with tiiiiiny triplets.

While I understand that the mama bear wants to make sure that none of the big male bears is advancing on her cubs, she keeps looking away from her fishing position just as a big salmon jumps right next to her.

OMG a cub fell into the river, current swept the cub near another bear, mama charged after the bear near her cub, teeth bared looking like a mad mama bear. Then the camera pans to the grass!!! Camera view stays on the ground until encounter is over and mama bear is herding the three cubs to the bank.
I guess it would be bad for business if we watched a big bear eat a cub.

11 bears in view at this hour, at least two of them omnomming.
Do the same bears that stay up until 11:30pm also get up at 7:00am?
Yes, I recognize that I appear to have developed a serious bear-watching obsession.

Looks like they posted a link to the video of the cub falling into the river incident that occurred yesterday evening. The live event happened so fast, I didn't realize TWO cubs had fallen in the river.
