Today's SLYT, Tomorrow's GPS turn by turn directions

Fast sharp right! Fast sharp right! Sharp right! Sharp right! Listen, Samir, you have to listen to my calls, please! (Some NSFW cursing)

At the 2013 Rally of Coimbatore, navigator Vivek Ponnusamy aids driver Samir Thapar. More rally video from Samir here.

Not everyone is pleased that only the "highlights" were posted: "if the 60 minute video had been viewed in its entirety, the context of each situation and instruction would have been clear."

Triple Caution! Triple Caution!

This is like EVE Online in that I love it even though I have no idea what is going on. And I'm really glad I'm not actually . . . playing?

And here I was thinking it was a GPS parody...

Does Samir say "shut up, yar" because that would be classic

Also Samir is my brother's name and I want to turn this into something that will torture him forever somehow.

This is just a feeling, but it seems like maybe Samir should make a sharp left. When he gets around to it.

You are not concentrating.

Because that driver, yeah, definitely daydreaming.

sweetkid, how about this?

In rally it can be argued that the co-driver is the one actually driving the car. Sure there is some meat puppet making control movements but he's no more in control of the car than a power steering pump or cruise control module is. It's the co-driver who tells the voice input receiver how much to turn, brake, or throttle at any given moment.

haha OMG where was that like Thanksgiving 2004 when I needed it.

Samir, please, I beg you! ... forever.

Okay, who else wants to see these two guys go on Top Gear now? Or even better - put the navigator in the same car as the Stig?

This is exactly why I haven't driven in a car with my mother as a passenger for almost 15 years.

Straight up comedy. Still laughing.

The co-drive virtually drives, Sami is attempting to weigh whether his impressions match the instructions and then act accordingly, that doesn't work in rally.

Alternative Finnish Version, with bonus James May, aspiring Finn.

Does anyone know how hard it is to get into rally driving? I've been sorely tempted (after a recent Top Gear watching binge).

So I guess if I get motion sick reading in the car, being a co-driver is not for me, huh?

I burst out laughing at, "You will break the car Samir. We will not finish!"

See if there's a series that's run near you, see what the organizers need from you, look at their classes (2wd / 4wd / turbo / no turbo / etc), see what looks doable / affordable, and go for it. If you've got the time and the means, you're off to a great start!

"Triple Caution!" will be my new rallying (err, no pun intended) cry at work.

(replacing the memorable "Danger Point!" from a few years back.

That gave me serious flashbacks to some of my engineering classes. *shudder*

What really makes this is that the pace notes were being read in real time, rather than ahead of time. Which is fairly unhelpful because once you're in a turn, it's not useful to be told you need to turn...

Years ago I toyed with the idea of entering a time-distance rally with a girlfriend as my co-driver and this is (in hindsight) like watching a video from the alternate reality where that actually happened.

Alas, neither, in sufficient abundance. Although I am going to try to get out to see a race in Michigan this winter.

This could have ended much worse. (Very NSFW exclamation at end, plus butt)

There are time-speed-distance rallies that are very much amateur events. That is, where it's mostly about teamwork and navigation. You don't race to be the fastest, you race to be the closest to a specified time over a specified distance. So you don't need a specially prepped car, or extra safety equipment.

I haven't done one myself yet, but it's on my list.
