The McNuggets Rap Because They Can't Sing

Still mourning the loss of walmart.horse? Well, the hot new whimsical mix of corporate identity and new TLDs is mcdonalds.hiphop, which serves up a YouTube playlist of hiphop/rap-themed McDonalds commercials going back 30 years and including non-U.S. content from the UK, Israel, France, Czech Republic, India, Russia and South Africa. From the same merry prankster who brought us nytimes.cat, which got C&D'd in record time, this one has survived a whole week so far (and with some publicity; thanks Mental Floss). But then, Mickey D's has a hiphop history that goes beyond commercials.

Wow, for all the hate ICANN gets for the prices of the new TLDs, it has unleashed a wave of creativity inspired by the ability to register such domains (and raised awareness of domains and URLs as a thing among the general public.)

I've seen the Russian Big Mac commercial a lot on TV!

For the record, my favorite domain register, Namecheap, has .horse for $25.88/year and .hiphop for $16.88 a year. .cat was already there as the national domain for Catalan ($30/year) and .dog is pending for August availability (that's gonna be fun). The one big brouhaha is over .sucks (previously), which at $250+ is no good for jokes, even ironically.

Still, fun may still be had with .cab ($13.88, perfect for Uber-haters), .cheap ($24.88, why hasn't madmagazine gotten one from that domain?), .club ($7.88, perfect price for small clubs), .guru (at $24.88 a cheaper ego-boost than .ceo at $88.88) or .link (ONLY $1.88, sorry, missing.link is taken).

Is .copm available? 'Cause, like, oh my god, the spoofertunities.

I managed to click the mcdonalds.hiphop link on my phone from inside my pocket, and was mystified by what I saw when I pulled it out to see what the noise was. I thought my phone might've had a trojan or something, or perhaps that an unscrupulous app had hijacked my browser in some kind of dimwitted attempt to serve me inscrutable advertisements.

Mystery solved.

well, shouldn't every MetaFilter Member in Good Standing own (or more accurately, rent) a "butts.newTLD" domain? We know cortex can't buy them with what he's paid here.

I remember the first time I saw an earnest toothy-smile-filled commercial for McDonalds where characters pointedly referred to it as "Micky Dee's!" It was as if they were trying to teach an entire audience: "Pay attention now! This is the cool way to talk about our dreary little dispensaries."

This was only topped by the Sunny Delight ads that likewise stressed the nickname "Sunny Dee". It all felt like some old man hoped the young people would enjoy it if he "got down", verbally.

I think in 5 years, weird TLDs will stop being weird, and start being normal. Until then, it's all gimmicks and jokes. (I'm surprised no one went super-white and registered .urban broaden the market beyond hip hop and into R&B and neo soul. And while I'm pondering stupid TLDs, why is there a .zone and no .planet? Remember when the hot trend of the late 1990s was to make a fansite about something and call it ThatThingPlanet.com?)

And now I'm annoyed at all the suggested domains that come up, thanks to the proliferation of TLDs. "You couldn't register CompanyName.com? Good news, you have options! Try CompanyName.name, CompanyName.guru, CompanyName.tattoo, CompanyName.church or CompanyName.attorney!

First, it's $2,500 - you missed a zero - and second, companies are buying their own .sucks domains, which is domain protection 101.

(One of the weirdest and most controversial things about the people who won the bid to register .sucks is that they are charging MORE if you own the trademark for whatever you're getting a .sucks for. I got the "$250+" from the registry's site.)
