The deputies in the To Catch a Predator-style sting responded to Crawford’s online ad seeking horseplay, arranged a meeting with him over the phone, picked him up at the Phoenix airport, and took him to meet a volunteer’s two mini-horses before arresting him for bestiality.

between the reporting pun and the fact that the guy was using the handle horseluvr47 and asking "are u rly a horse" I was like "oh, the quaint days of the old internet" and then I looked up and saw that this was from last week

The problem I have with this is that his wife is a horse.

This response interests me. Partially the phrasing: the blog is more about the wife than the husband, from the brief look I took, so why focus on him? There's no problem with the horse having a human husband, but there is a problem with the human having a horse wife?

That leads on to 'where do you draw the line'? If our hypothetical sentient horse wife had a hypothetical sentient canine husband, would that be an issue? How about human / humanoid alien? Human / X-Man (i.e. a mutant)? I seem to recall some time ago reading about some people projecting personalities onto objects, and so one woman wanted to marry a section of picket fence. Is this the same issue?

This reminds me somewhat of this funny Japanese comic my wife introduced me to. It is about a cat who learned how to do housework and works for a maid service type thing. The cat's name is Nekomura-san.

For example:
http://casabrutus.com/en/special/nekomura/1

Makes about as much sense as Horse Wife I think. The tone is a bit more matter-of-fact and absurdist. Also, Nekomura-san appears to be better at cooking and cleaning than Horse Wife. I mean, she got a job doing it, whereas Horse Wife doesn't seem to have many marketable skills, other than hugging. No offense meant to Horse Wife, of course.

I was thinking of doing a post on Nekomura-san at some point.

In a similar vein, Neko Ramen, for which much of the humor is based on cats being poorly-suited for work in the food service industry. (And the twist: humans not being all that much better at it either).

Actually, she doesn't really resemble any horse I've ever seen.

If we are to read this as a satire on the housewifely role (can we?) then it makes sense that she should be both a toy and the kind that covertly encodes qualities of infancy. The traditional husband, we are surely invited to agree, wishes not merely to objectify the wife, but also to infantilise, both in the service of society's oppressive power relations, and dare we say, in order to gratify his unacknowledged paedophilia.

Probably the full depth of the semiotic apparatus escapes me, though.

The wife is being portrayed as childish, immature and incompetent. Literally represented by a child's toy. The husband's loving, devoted accessory.

I found it creepy and weird.

I thoroughly agree. Quite deficient in the muzzle and those ears are way oversized. I mean, I have big ol' mare ears, but this's somethin' else entirely.

I have some questions about those legs but I get kind of squicky when I try to look closely.

All of which is perfectly valid criticism. The thing is, that isn't what they were complaining about. If the topic of the tumblr was, instead of a fantasy horse, a fantasy elf living in the modern world, would there have been the same objection (his wife is an elf)? I haven't looked at the tumblr in detail, but I imagine a lot of the jokes would be the same.

If everyone's objection is the infantilisation and objectification of the wife, irrespective of species, I'm fine with that. I just found the focus on the species, as opposed to the other stuff, and the holding of the human to be more important than the wife, interesting. Sort of.

I'll shut up now.

I saw it as a parody of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, especially in the way the ponies manipulate things without having hands. Of course that cartoon was so very very long ago, so it's only natural people here wouldn't get the reference.

I got the reference. And yes, it's a parody. MLP:FiM used to be one of my daughter's favorite shows when she was 5 and 6, so it played constantly in my house for at least a year or two. She's now 7 and has only just grown out of it. Two new "Equestria Girls" movies were released in the last year and a half, and they've been on various tvs and electronic devices so much in my house that I can practically quote dialogue.
