Napkins today are mundane and practical, made from paper or cheap factory cloth and folded, if at all, hastily into a rectangle. In the past, napkins weren't just for wiping hands or protecting clothing — they were works of art...

That's amazing. Rather than sufficiently advanced technology bring indistinguishable from magic, I feel that it should be origami and things like this. I can't imagine what goes into creating these.

I can't imagine grabbing something like that to wipe my mouth. Were they actually used, or only for display?

My greatest paper napkin folded achievement occurred on Saturday when I created a working (for 1 bottle at least) beer bottle opener.
