Only shooting stars break the mold

I am Star Man! This is my latest audio transmission, pairing Tori Amos' 'Winter' with Smash Mouth's 'All Star'! God help us all.

Irresistibly terrible music—and I think I mean that as a compliment?—previously on MeFi and AskMe.

It's a cool place, and they say it gets colder. Things are gonna change so fast.

I caught this on twitter somehow yesterday and it is deliiiiiiiicious.

And, as waxy noted, the Smash Mouth lyrics themselves when read with the right attitude are totally plausible Tori-ish lyrics.

How far has Smash Mouth fallen? They're one of the headliners at Septemberfest in the Chicago suburb we live in. They'll be playing for free next to the village municipal office during the daytime while people browse arts and crafts, eat funnel cake, and take pony rides. The Elks Lodge will be selling bingo cards nearby.

The other headliners? A Prince and the Revolution cover band.

How far has Smash Mouth fallen? They've fallen down da down down yeah. (Note that despite the title, that song is not a mash-up. It's an official, original release from a major record label in 2016. Keep that in mind as you listen.)

I guess it's relative? They're still apparently playing music for a living so even with their steep decline I'm still looking up at them (like a star in the sky).

Shrugs and goes back to writing code for someone else

It could be worse. At least there are pony rides.

Seen on Twitter:
I'm not saying that David Bowie was holding the fabric of the universe together, but *gestures broadly at everything*

Not far enough.

I dunno, now that I can hear the lyrics, I think it shows there's some real inventiveness in All Star. "Your brain gets smart but your head gets dumb," for example.

All I'm saying is, it's not exactly BUNKO SCREAM JAR.

Whatevs. I hope they made their bundle and will be comfortable for the rest of their lives. That's more than many can say, yeah?

Wait, how is this not from Neil Cicierega?

See, for example, Imagine All Star People.

And all of Mouth Sounds.

That is indeed amazing, much like his work generally.

Also, it isn't even related but I feel compelled to at least mention his masterpiece, Bustin.

I bet Tori Amos actually would love this.

I just wanted to drop in and be the 7th to say that Neil "Lemon Demon" Cicierega did it first and better. But if there were a 'cheesy pop music' version of "The Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny", Smash Mouth would be playing Godzilla. (And, just for the record, Weird Al would be Mister Rogers)

Smash Mouth is our folk music. No one owns the Smash Mouth mashup, it is available to everyone.

We can all smash up mash mouth, but just an FYI, Neil's here to remind you of ... something.

posted by Etrigan at 9:58 AM on August 16, 2016 [2 favorites]

We didn't have middle school. High School was 8th through 12th grade. The first day of 8th grade was like getting off the bus in "The Shawshank Redemption".
