John Dean's Watergate Expose, due to be published Monday, will not be as illuminating as he earlier claimed. Meanwhile, two time Pulitzer Prize winner William Gaines's journalism class at the University of Illinois names Pat Buchanan as Deep Throat on NBC's Dateline.

Pat's star is rising these days.

You'd think if it were Pat he already would have outed himself. My best guess is still John Sears.

He DID NOT name Pat Buchanan as Deep Throat. That was the general opinion of the class he taught. He made no statement, and no consensus was made during the Dateline show... although, personally, Buchanan does seem likely.

Your concept has merit: good point.

Now I've got mental images of Pat Buchanan performing fellatio on Harry Reems.

Thanks for that.

I was always tempted by Haig, myself; the rumors surrounding Mark Felt were looking fairly convincing, though. Now this ... boy, I haven't seen the evidence myself, but these guys were convinced.

For those who didn't see the show, Gaines -- former investigative journalist himself -- was cool as a cucumber on camera, refusing to take a stand other than agreeing that his class ... was in agreement. He will continue the investigation with next year's graduate class, and who knows whether he'll get any closer. Of all the names the class had remaining, living persons who had not otherwise been eliminated, all denied it -- except Pat, who responded through a spokesman that he had no comment.

I would be curious what he has said about this in the past. Surely the subject came up more than once on Crossfire?

Still, there's a potentially fatal flaw here: they are operating under the assumption that every statement Woodward has made about Deep Throat is factually correct and reliable to a T, with no misdirection, errors, or misjudgements.
