The casting, alone, is brilliant and will make the whole thing worthwhile.

I'm so pumped after seeing this with no audio even, everything looks great! Can't remember seeing a book adaptation in a long time without just fussing over things looking wrong.

Not to be confused with the teaser trailer we talked about earlier.

I'm hoping the Queen soundtrack of the trailers (teaser: You're My Best Friend, this one: Under Pressure) extends to the show itself.

Ohhh I am so happy.

Especially since it's sounding from early reviews that s2 of American Gods will be disappointing, at least we'll have this.

Premieres on my birthday!

I will be out seeing Raúl Esparza in Hamlet that evening, but will absolutely watch the first ep the next day.

I hate to say that the trailer is underwhelming, but... it kind of is underwhelming. I'm hoping that's just the relatively choppy-yet-meandering editing choices, because that is a hell of a cast (no pun intended). Frances McDormand as God and Benedict Cumberbatch as Satan -- both of which are actually relatively minor supporting roles? They got everybody they wanted, didn't they.

Also hi Jon Hamm you still have the best face--now with extra Liz-Taylor-purple eyes!

(Hamm has the best moment in the trailer, IMO.)

I've been a fan of the book for two decades, and I love many of the actors involved, and I'll likely watch this, but holy God, that's a lot of white people onscreen.

(And before people well-actually me, yes, I know Pepper is black even though she is only shown out of focus and in the background for the trailer, and Anathema's actress is Puerto Rican/Guatamalan, but S T I L L. When the two most visible racial minorities onscreen for your series are fucking FAMINE and POLLUTION, reconsider your shit.)

It looks amazing to me. I am a pile of fangirl nonsense now.

(joyceanmachine, I just saw your point. You’re right.)

I thought the trailer seemed a bit choppy because they covered....basically the entire story from start to finish including the final confrontation. I know it's a well-known book and hardly spoil-able but it seemed more like a synopsis than a trailer.

Hamm is so fun, and I love when he can go nuts. He is one of my favorite actors. Also Sheen + Tennant I AM HERE FOR THIS. One of my favourite books!

What I think is interesting about the Tennant/Sheen casting is that I could just as easily imagine it with them swapping roles.

This looks good. The delivery of that line by the actor who's playing Adam Young was perfect.

Was that intro scoring an ironic repurposing of the Harry Potter theme, a direct ripoff, or another tune that I don't recognize?

I'm quite giddy about this.

I had that thought too. The composer is David Arnold, who scored Independence Day and the Broderick Godzilla, as well as BBC's Sherlock and Little Britain. He also did a few of the Bond films - both Brosnan and Craig.

Honestly? I kind of even want to see that version more.

(But this will do nicely, I suspect.)

Unsurprisingly, that's still two too many for some cretins.

So much of Good Omens is concerned with the gang of children. If I was adapting it I might be tempted to minimize their scenes to focus more on the lead actors - the trailer certainly leans in this direction. But they have certainly found the perfect looking Adam Young, so perhaps my fears are unfounded.

I still want the flipped casting, and have from the start. This will be fine, of course, they're highly-qualified professionals, but they both would have done much more interesting comedy the other way around.

Still, I'm excited!

Time was that I wanted Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie to play Aziraphale and Crowley, respectively, but I am sure this is for the best. One of the Youtube commenters says that Terry Gilliam wanted to make this with Robin Williams and Johnny Depp, which would have been a disaster on every level, although I think that Williams could have made a good Aziraphale in his post-manic, post-adorable serious phase.

This is great casting but hopefully the script is better than this uninspired bottom-shelf vanilla milquetoast trailer made it out to be, because if these are the quirky and funny highlights then...that's not good.
posted by turbid dahlia at 2:21 PM on March 6, 2019 [2 favorites]

I don't envy someone trying to cut a trailer to sum up Good Omens because it's kind of three stories at once. I can understand them focusing on Aziraphale and Crowley because that's got the best hook but they don't end up doing a whole lot in the book.

But, yeah, while I would like this to be good the stars aren't really aligning here. I think Gaiman's reached that comfortable living-legend-can-do-no-wrong phase many authors get into (and Pratchett, to his credit, managed to force himself out of once or twice), the BBC radio adaptation didn't have the pop and spark from the books, and none of these trailers, so far, have convinced me they're nailing it.

We are never going to get the perfect cast. That's just a given. I mean, I'm sure Michael McKean will be great as Shadwell, but he's not Spike Milligan, nor could he ever be.

Will what they release on May 31 be the whole thing, or will they make us wait to see the end?

What I think is interesting about the Tennant/Sheen casting is that I could just as easily imagine it with them swapping roles.

That flipped cast is what I had initially assumed it would be (Tennant grew up a minister's kid, and I've sensed he has a little bit of a goody-two-shoes streak as a result) but when I saw the first publicity photos of them in their roles I thought "okay never mind, I'll take this."

Speaking of photos, Neil Gaiman occasionally would tweet from the set during filming, and everyone was disappointed he did not accompany this tweet with a picture:

"Roses are red. Violets are blue. Today we are shooting David Tennant in a bath in Hell. And I love you."

I think Michael Sheen is a thoroughly underrated actor. I have enjoyed him in everything I've seen him in, and he's always been entirely different. Here, his line readings of "I don't even like you!" and "To... the world!" are just so perfect and nuanced. Can't wait.

It is a foolish idea, but I keep hoping they also shot all of the scenes with roles reversed. Then release both versions.

Yeah, CST sent out an email to all ticket-holders about one hour after I made that comment yesterday. I am sadder about it than I would have imagined I could be, and somewhat pissed off, and will likely be getting a refund.

But that just means I can sit in my pajamas and watch this instead! (I'm assuming they're dropping all six episodes at once? Oh please oh please.)

Sorry for the brief-OT everyone. As you were.

Yep, no complaints about the casting. Given the timing, casting David Tenant for any role is basically a requirement for this project.

In my mind's eye, though, I envisioned a much more exaggerated/ graphic novel styling (with nods to modern looks) of a 1926 black Bentley. Maybe I'm biased and dig the looks of that era's Rolls Royce Phantoms more.
