How boygenius Became the World’s Most Exciting Supergroup

On their own, Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus are three accomplished singer-songwriters. Together, they're a one-of-a-kind band powered by friendship, sick books, and sicker songs. [Rolling Stone / Archive, boygenius previously and previouslier]

Baker: February can … we’ve talked about this.
Dacus: Were you about to say February can suck a dick?
Baker: No. February consistently sucks.
Bridgers: Consistently suck a dick!
Dacus [to me]: Sorry if your birthday is in February or something.

a great write-up, brilliant Nirvana photo remake.

Apology accepted.
They’re right, though. February is the most gawdawful month of the year.

Love them and can't wait for the full album. I've seen each of them separately: Baker, Dacus (x2), and Bridgers in BOCC but I'd love to see the full group. The first time that we saw Lucy Dacus, it was in a tiny club and there were no tables left but a couple asked if we wanted to sit at their table. It was Dacus's parents who were just so excited for her.

I love that BTS picture of the Nirvana photoshoot showing Bridgers and Baker on apple crates. Dacus is very tall.

And they last released music together in 2018, no YouTube videos for it but here’s the EP on Spotify.

Dacus is very tall.

I googled, she’s the same height as me! 178cm/5’10”.

Sad to see that the Brooklyn Steel show from 2018 has been taken down from YouTube.

Shit! I’ve watched that video so many times. It was incredibly charming to see Phoebe and Lucy doing the “We’re not worthy” bow-down to Julien while she played her guitar solo, simultaneously shredding and embarrassed. I love this group.

The Tiny Desk is still online, as is the KEXP performance.

The only thing I know about this is a song by Dacus - I Don't Want to be Funny Anymore

Love her voice
Love the wit
Love the song!

Super looking forward to the new release! I'm a fan of all three, and have probably listened to Sprained Ankle more times than is strictly healthy.

Dacus is the strongest of the 3 and in a league of her own IMHO, but this group is still one of the best supergroup surprises of the last few years.

Stop what you're doing and watch 4 minutes of a young Julien Baker singing solo in a Memphis parking garage. Bring your hanky.

Their Tiny Desk was mentioned on the blue sometime in the past but, man, Lucy Dacus' solo in Ketchum, ID is a thing of sorrowful beauty. I don't know what she's doing with her voice - a breathy raspiness - but, wow, I've listened to that part of the concert so many times that, if it were a tape, it'd be even more warbly.

Here is that section

The amazing thing about boygenius is that actually all three are the strongest one in a league of their own.

This is cool, they remind me of my favorite Sleater-Kinney tracks.

Also, kind of weird combination of feeling old bc I don't already know who they are, and feeling validated for their love of the mainstream the classic rock that most of their own demographic usually reflexively sneers at.

Beautiful voices. Sound like they might be a little influenced by Neko Case; their lyrics are very heartfelt and thought provoking. Neat stuff!

Amazing how people my age I know say there’s no good new music being made nowadays. Just have to know where to look is all. Great post!

Found via Reddit (but not Google Search) that the entire unedited show is still up. It's all three solo shows and then the combined one.
