a discussion from 2006 with a lot of broken image links...

and, I know I've seen this before...

This does not bode well...

Wow, to borrow a phrase from saliva, it's amazing what a rorschach test these comics are.

It seems like the person writing the captions on superdickery was kind of grasping at straws to find comics to make dirty jokes about.

Unintentional? You obviously haven't met many comics artists.

Well, I thought this was all rather anachronistic and overinterpreted until I saw this.

A lot of broken images, but that's OK because here's the home version:

1) Read a comic panel aloud
2) At the end, say "...THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID!"

hm, you joined in 2006, and this is your first post... perhaps some kind of time delay thing?

Monty Python did a bit once making an ever more desperate series of attempts to do the wink-wink nudge-nudge routine to a series of increasingly non-double-entendre-able words. Now THAT was funny...

It's the first time this link has shown up on Mefi. We don't all have the luxury to to roam 20 different sites and whine about it later when it shows up on here.

And why the commotion about the date? Was a 1954 Archie cover more salient 10 months ago? Jesus.

Well, if there's been a previous link to Superdickery here, I can't find it.

Very funny. I think I've seen some of these before, but who cares? I'm stuck here at work late, and I'm laughing.

Why do MeFites love to complain so?

Sorry everyone. I'll do better next time. :)

Isn't the entire genre of comic book art built on sexual insecurity and frustration sublimated into exaggerated and suggestive imagery? Why separate a few images from the vast herd (and make viewers wallow through a discussion board to see them...)?

Nudge Nudge Wink Wink

And I was hoping this would be in the way back machine so I could see the dead images but no, not in there.

I wasn't complaining about the actual post! Just expressing amusement at the general notion that "MADDOX ALREADY DID IT," which is kind of funny no matter what situation you find it in.

Mulp- Yeah, that one is hilarious. When you first start reading it, it's like, "Oh yeah, ha ha, some STD joke, lame." Then after 3 guys mention the women they've doomed, and Batman is thinking about Robin... it totally kicks it up a notch.

I agree with the poster on that message board who pointed out that it really wasn't a simpler time, and that artists lived for the chance of sneaking something sexual into the comics under the boss's noses.

Amazing that so many people think the past was just like it was portrayed in G-rated movies.

posted by Miko at 9:53 AM on July 12, 2007

Horse apples. If you reworded it and said that the superhero genre is largely built on empowerment fantasies, with sexual insecurity and frustration being major components, I'd agree with you 100%. But by a) reducing all comics to superhero comics, which is as silly as reducing all music to gangsta rap, and b) saying that sexual frustration is the basis for the whole shooting match, rather than just something frequently in the mix, you're painting with a brush that's about three sizes too broad. I've always really admired your postings, both here and at MeCha; hence the disappointment.
posted by COBRA! at 12:33 PM on July 12, 2007

I agree with your refinements of my slapdash statement, so we agree 100%.

I guess it's my week to disappoint people. It was definitely a lame comment. But I endured mountains of superhero comics all over my house during my teenage years, as my brother built his estimable collection - forgive me if I overreact to the reappearance of bulging musculature and water-balloon breasts. It's just that after considering all that for so long, my response to the discussion-list compilation here is kind of like "What?! You mean to tell me there is suppressed sexual fantasy hidden in this artwork? I'm shocked, shocked."
