Pimp C, one half of Texas rap group UGK (along with Bun B) was found dead today in a hotel room in Los Angeles.
Cool, I've been waiting for a new rap moniker to become available.

HOLIDAY SEASON IS HARD.

I think, statistically, Some White Guy From Some 80s Group dies at least once a week.

I would suggest reading the Bun B interview from The Believer whether you're a fan of UGK or not. If there's anyone that can bring an intellectual flavor* to southern rap, which is generally regarded (and often for good reason) as a mindless genre, it's Bun B.
*Outkast as well, but they made the great pop culture leap forward.

Alternatively they could try to fill backstory with the brave exploits of Pimp A, but it might prove too revisionist to the canon and spawn a fanbase backlash.

I bought UGK's recently released self-titled double-disc album and listened to it during my Thanksgiving vacation, and was pleasantly surprised to find that it did not in fact have an entire disc of filler, like every other two-disc rap album in history.
For those who've heard it--can someone explain to me why they repeatedly namechecked Dick Cheney and Tony Snow? Were Bun B and Pimp C simply in awe of them, or are their names codewords for something else?

Bun B's nickname was (is) "Big Dick Cheney", which is one of my favorite hiphop nicknames of all time (right behind Cam'ron's "Young 60 Minutes" and Fidel Cashflow). He called Pimp C Tony Snow... Not sure about the cocaine reference, but what else would you expect from the guys who brought your "Cocaine in the Back of The Ride"...

SweetJesus - I agree on "Big Dick Cheney" as one of the best rap nicknames. UGK's also responsible for my favorite drug reference: "I got Bobby by the pound, Whitney by the key."
Pimp C was a very capable if often unfocused producer with a seemingly encyclopedic knowledge of classic era soul music. Bun B's always really been the more interesting of the duo. The complexities of his rhyme scheme are levels above most rappers, but it's easy to miss because he delivers it so effortlessly. Plus, how many rappers drop references to Larry David, David Letterman and (??) Rich Little in interviews?

man, what a loss. Pimp C was an artist, not some fake record company persona. He was multitalented-- like he said in "Life Is 2009", he could write your rhymes, sing your hook, and make you a beat. UGK were just now getting their due after 10+ years in the rap game. He should have been around for many more albums.
Bun B is going to record something amazing to honor him, I can tell you that.

We get it. You don't take rap seriously. You don't care. You think his name is funny. He's dead, ha ha.
Great jokes. Those of us who listen to rap have never heard them before, especially from the informed, white-liberal free-thinking crowd.
Nope, never.

This is sad. Only 33 years old.
I heard about this yesterday after I got home from work because my partner has edited some of the local dirty south videos over the years. I have very little awareness of rap music in general, but living in Houston and with an editor I get to hear some of the local artists. I heard the following songs over and over again as they were edited and grew rather fond of both:
Draped Up
Knocking Down Doors
