It's that time of year again. The RPM Challenge has been opened again for 2008. Can you record an album of 10 songs and/or 35 minutes during the month of February and send it in by the end of the month? Previously

Nope. No, I can't. I've tried twice.

Can I? Sure. Should I? Not Sure.

Damn, that came back around fast! Why, I get a little misty-eyed thinking back on throwing those 10 tunes together at accelerated, feverished pace, and putting it into the mail at the last hour of the deadline... ah, golden memories. It's not in the cards for me this time, though. I'm doing a February tour with Mike Watt and Kramer! Wheeeeee!

Man, why did they have to pick the shortest month?

But when will that leave time to play TF2?

Considering the time frame in which I usually finish NaSoAlMo, this one shouldn't be difficult. It just remains to be seen if I feel like bothering with it, I guess.

It's a leap year, so at least we have an extra day. Last year was a great experience for me, and I'm really looking forward to participating again.

I'd like to encourage people to check out the jukebox from last year - over 800 albums covering just about every style of music. Sure, not all of it is fantastic, but there really were some outstanding entries.

Local flavor from '07, for that matter.

I didn't have the guts to give this a shot last year, but I think I'll give it a go. The worst that could happen is I end up with a bunch of new material for the band.

flapjax-- that kicks ass! Let me know if you guys come through LA.

From the newsletter:

We can't keep it a secret any longer -- after extensive hush-hush negotiations with the Gregorian ambassador, RPM Challenge HQ is proud to annunce that we have sucessfully arranged for an extra day in February to write and record your RPM album!

Heh. I can't wait for next year's sober acknowledgment that "mistakes were made" and how "the additional day was a regrettable error".

Who's ready to make 40 minutes of minimal dance music?

I think I might be.

10 songs of TF2 MeFight Club madness... coming up.

This next track is called "Meeediiiiic!"

I wish we were, IZ, but this is just a Japan tour. But, hey, if we rattle the gates of Heaven or Hell, maybe this one-off band will turn into a thing, and we'll be coming through LA someday! Of course, Watt, being a California guy, plays around the state a lot, so I reckon you can catch him from time to time.

Let's see, that'll probably take about, what... 80 minutes?

I'm just kidding, of course... Making good stuff that's really minimal can be the most difficult thing of all!

I did it last year and it was a lot of fun. This year I plan to do it again; last time it was nerdcore rap, this time it might be dubstep or acoustic singer-songwriter blahblah or maybe something completely different.

I'd recommend the experience to anyone, as it makes for a nice creative jump-off point whether you meet the timeframes or not.

I might actually fail to wuss out on trying this this year. Maybe.

I'm gonna sign up again. I hope things go better than last year.

Nope, can't, but I hope everyone who does do it finishes and has a great time.

I was half-joking, but an Audion-biting record would probably be fun and doable. It'll be a fun genre exercise, and the harsh time constraints will (hopefully) keep me from overthinking it too much.

Also, it will probably suck hard and be mind-numbingly boring.

But maybe not!
