Pepsi White

Pepsi White, a "cola-yogurt" drink, has been launched by Pepsi as a limited edition beverage, according to Japan Marketing News.

The drink went on sale in Japan this week, and was distributed by Suntory. The label design, clothed on a transparent bottle, is predominantly white and looks fit for the festive market.

The Japan Marketing News article suggests that "a deeper, more memorable flavour" would have been more appropriate taking into consideration the time of year and the traditional spike in the consumption of sweet products.

While in Thailand I tried a non-carbonated yogurt flavoured water. It was watery, sweet and milky.

Oh, it'll be memorable. No doubt about that.

And it looks so professional too. You can drink it at work and nobody will mind.

cola-yogurt

Yeah those are two words that should never ever ever ever be used in the same sentence.

Some Pepsi exec was obviously watching some old Laverne and Shirley episodes while baked out of their gourd... "Pepsi annndd millkkk.. pepsi annnd miilllk. I know! Yogurt!"

I've seen this in the convenience stores here. It looks... upsetting. I managed to avoid the cucumber pepsi last summer (some students in my class had a bottle, took a sip, made a noise of disgust, then closed the bottle and tossed it out), but this yogurt pepsi, I feel it's calling to me. It whispers to me as I pass it in the aisle.

I must be strong.

I do have to give them credit for the honesty entailed in describing the flavor as "memorable". I'm sure it will be.

Eh, not that shocking considering that there's a carbonated version of Calpis/Calpico.

I happen to like the non-carbonated stuff, so I'd probably give it a try.

I had a lot of Chinese friends as a kid (mostly of Taiwanese origin), and several of them would drink what I think I correctly remember as a soy milk soda that was only available in Asian markets. I've seen it or something similar more recently in the "Asian Food" aisle at certain supermarkets as well. Probably the nastiest drink I've ever tasted, but they loved the shit. Cultural differences, I guess. I'll eat your mom's cooking all day, but you can have the soy soda to yourself, bro.

Well, I can't see the link and I have no idea what Pepsi White might taste like, but for the record, in Switzerland there is a soda called Rivella, which has been around since the 50's. It's made from whey - yes, as in the byproduct of cheesemaking. It's also DELICIOUS. The first taste is a little, "...Hunh," but then the addiction sinks in, and I really wish Rivella could succeed in getting their product into American markets because I can only drink so much of the stuff when I visit my parents. (Goddamnit, now I'm having a craving, and it's almost two months until Christmas.)

"cola-yogurt" drink,

Call it 'cogurt.' On second thought, don't, sounds like a dessert served in a Ukranian prison.

So many of the comments here seem to indicate that a "cola yogurt drink" is something unusual. Maybe it is in Captain Wonderbread-land, but it sounds pretty tame to me. If you think Pepsi White is weird, You Have No Idea as to what is Out There.

I do have some idea of what's out there. Weird is relative, not absolute. I don't think peanut butter is weird, but I realize that's very American.

"cola-yogurt" drink

Just don't shake the bottle before you open it, you'll end up looking like you just took a "money shot". That gives me an idea "Money Shot Energy Drink", maybe Peter North would endorse it. I am a sick man.

I once saw somebody I worked with (at a movie theater) pouring those little single-serving coffee-creamer things in a cup and then filling it with Coke. I acted appalled and made puking noises until she made me taste it; it tasted exactly like an ice cream float. Which in hindsight is obvious, but seemed epiphanical at the time. I think this has potential.

I had a bottle of this stuff the other day, it's actually not bad. Kind of like cream soda (not the red kind) with a strong cola aftertaste.
posted by nightchrome at 10:06 PM on November 1, 2008

Well, we already have carbonated yogurt in the states, Fizzix.

I tried some, it was fairly odd. Mostly I kept wondering if the yogurt had gone bad or not.

So is this stuff supposed to be refrigerated?

FWIW, my review of Pepsi White: it's good enough to drink, didn't make me make funny faces, and has a really pleasant smell. Flavor is nice but a bit too sweet (I think the same of regular Pepsi though). Not good enough to get me to switch from Grape Fanta Crack.

I don't know why y'all are getting the impression it actually has yogurt in it, or is yogurt. Same as the Grape Fanta (crack!) is specifically labelled as having no juice in it. It's flavored, and colored, but I don't think there's any actual yogurt in it. And heck yes you're supposed to drink it cold. For duh.

Kudos and thanks to KokuRyu on the Bloom County reference ("Malted battery acid"). Let me try to paint a picture: Milo and Binkley are discussing (c. 198?) which carbonated, caffeinated, heavily-sugared beverage to purchase from a vending machine. They bring up the various pros and cons (e.g., Michael Jackson endorsed Pepsi; he was already weird back then, so this was both pro and con) before one them (probably Milo) concludes that both taste like malted battery acid and they decide they should instead get some milk.

Someone, maybe me, should tell Pepsi that simply because a color or hue exists doesn't necessitate that it be incorporated into a soft drink name. I would hate to see Pepsi Yellow.
posted by IvoShandor at 12:51 PM on November 2, 2008

I would hate to see Pepsi Yellow.

It already exists as Mountain Dew. This is not a liquid you would see in a glass and think "refreshing, high-caffeine beverage" so much as "Great, now I can unclog that drain".

It's like Pepsi mixed with Calpis, with a slightly sour aftertaste. Granted, you have to bear in mind that here in Japan, "yogurt" is considered a flavor.
