I didn't know what "hurdy gurdy" was or why the Russians have it, but on listening to some of this, yes. In hindsight, it is clear that this is just the Russian hurdy gurdy I wanted.

I was once bitten by the hurdy gurdy mans monkey. All I tried to do was give the little bastard a nickel, which was a lot of money for a monkey back in the mid 1960's. (Not this guy, but close.) Neat post, though, so thanks FJ@M.

You know, I've been hearing since I was a wee music nerd that the Rite of Spring was based on Russian folk music — but I've gotta say, that first link is the first time I've ever heard Russian folk music that sounded anything like it.
It's not just the drone, although that helps. It's the crooked phrasing — three- or four- or five-bar phrases instead of just four, four, four, four all the time — and the trick which Stravinsky loved of repeating a phrase with a few notes added or taken away each time to make a larger melody.
Anyway, this has made my inner wee music nerd very happy. Thanks!

The hurdy gurdy is easily my favorite archaic European instrument.

As soon as I saw "Russian hurdy gurdies" I was looking for the NSFW tag.
