This is what Metafilter really is. It's not a place for reasoned discussion (er... sometimes), it's a bunch of tiny emoticon faces going whiz-bang-zoom through a bunch of arrows and getting boxed in by each other.

(the maze bit at the bottom that shoots you all the way to the top is so neat!)

Cursor keys move your little emoticon around, though you can't climb through empty space. Arrows on the map shove you in that direction. Dots on the map seem to slow you down and you can climb up a column of them.

On the bottom there's a row of icons for adding arrows, dots, blocks, or blank squares. Click on one of these and then click on the part of the room to change to what you selected. If you don't see this, and you're in the Friends of Mathowie room, you should see a little password box instead, where you enter: mefi

Does that help any?
posted by FishBike at 4:18 PM on May 8, 2010

As far as I can tell, dots are like anti-gravity. On top of blank spaces, you'll fall, but on dotted spaces, you can move in any direction.

The early link to the Mefi room does the game a disservice, I think (no offense, ZsigE). When anyone can edit, it turns into a chaotic free-for-all. Which has its charms, but when a few talented people stake out a room with limited editing rights, some really amazing stuff can happen.

I just got done with the "5 Floors" room, which I highly recommend. I had the good fortune of coming across it when it was only half-built, and got to watch as 2-3 industrious smilies constructed the rest of it.

The gamespace is split into several distinct levels traversed by a zig-zagging path. Along the floor of each level are a mat of arrow pushing you back to where you started. Each level has a theme -- lava caves, outer space, Mario-esque grassy platforms -- and you have to negotiate some tough platforming gameplay to reach the end.

In order to build it, they laid out "tracks" of zero-gravity dots that crisscrossed the world like scaffolding. They'd move up, down, and across these lines, laying down the platforms and arrows and perfecting the landscape for each level. It was like a two-dimensional Magrathea.

Each designer was followed by a gaggle of impatient players, hopping around with goofy grins and jockeying to be the first to try each section as it was built. The careless ones would plunge off the edge into the void, but the builders thoughtfully left a way back to the level (though you'd have to re-conquer what had already been completed to earn the privilege of re-joining the editors as they built).

In the end, they cleverly left behind a few tracks in between the ceilings and floors of each level, allowing players who'd beat the game to observe those still playing. At the end of the run, players confused by the "audience" following their progress were rewarded with a line of dots that let them join the crowd (or an express elevator to the beginning of the whole thing). Seeing the little X( turn into :D was a treat. Emoting with that limited palate is a challenge, but a fun one.

Thanks for the link, sveskemus, this was surprisingly entertaining!

I find the platformy-spaces where you have to jump and jump and jump really frustrating. I get one good jump with the spacebar then boom I've fallen into the "go back to start" area. I love the concept, but typical "mario"-esque gameplay seems way harder than it needs to be. Spent half an hour and can't get it.

Love the concept though.
posted by artlung at 7:06 PM on May 8, 2010

I agree artlung, the floors are really "slippery". Those game-style levels, while awesome and interesting, are really frustrating to actually play. Judging by the other little smiley faces playing with me, it's a universal issue.

Yeah, I saved a screen shot of the map just now because the room is pretty much full of stuff, and yet sparsely populated so things people have built are staying intact for the moment. But it would be nice if we could save a shot of the whole thing at normal size instead of map size, at least.

But maybe this is really part of the fun of it? A year from now we can sit around and talk about how "Hey, I was there, man, when they drew the answer in that room. Taters are... well, there's just no way to put it into words. You just had to be there."

The early link to the Mefi room does the game a disservice, I think (no offense, ZsigE).

None taken. I tend to agree - had a lot more fun playing "5 Rooms", which incidentally feels much like an early Nintendo platformer both in theme and ridiculous difficulty, than I did with some of what was going on in Friends of Mathowie. I think that was largely because cool stuff tended to get either wrecked by the penis-drawing brigade, or simply overruled by the next cool thing to come along. (My Trogdor the Burninator didn't last too long.)

That said, the current state of the room is amazing, and it's settled down a bit from the early minutes of complete anarchy to a more stable state. With injokes. I'm sure there's some deeper social point to be drawn out from that, but I'm not at all sure what it is.

Not to triple post, apparently it was someone named flashback, who also has like 10 rooms to his name and enjoys penises and swastikas quite a bit. Is that just one user with a crapload of spare time or some secret forum of trolls, anyone know?

Also, does anyone get the impression that harold_dumbacher has been making his rounds? Doesn't seem to take very long before "CORTEX SUCKS" shows up in every MeFi room. That's pretty creepy, if so...

Anyway, I'm going to start a new "Friends of Mathowie" room since "The Tubes" is pretty full up. Password will be "mefimefi".

Someone's been writing "kill your dog" for the better part of an hour and ive been erasing it, it's getting boring though :/

hey all ASCII artists, the maze needs (hopefully interactive) decorations!

It loops now! It's more than two minutes long.

I'll take credit for 'Profesional Alley' (spelling later fixed) and the big drop through the ramp next to the pool. After walking the dog I added the Mario type flag launch thingy near the end and some other spaces with lots of arrows. I don't know who I was working with but it was awesome. Come in and try it before it disappears!

Nice work xorry, I made the traditional maze and was psyched to see the re-routes! I like "profesional Alley" in its original form, but the correct spelling is good too I suppose. Shows how "profesional" we are...

Decorative people, please come decorate, with something other than stuff about killing dogs preferably.

Jesus, it just occurred to me: This is my Farmville, isn't it?

Haha, yeah. This is the biggest time waster I've encountered in years. There's a ton of room to add art and more track.

Please...do. But I need more art! Aaaaaaart! (interactive art!)

Alright, y'all get some cool things done in there tonight. I'm off to bed, but I will leave a sentinel in the room to keep it alive.

Interactive? I ran some track through what I think is your snail, how's that? There's also someone working on a nice strawberry. It's looking great! Can't wait to check everything out in the morning.

That's not a strawberry it's sriracha sauce! Thanks for helping with it.

I put the reptiles in there a third the way through the run. I was going to draw a snake on a plane, but ran out of room.

that snake is super cool.

I made a little stairway from the brain bolts to extend the reach up to HATE

What's with all the swastikas in the game rooms?

What's with all the swastikas in the game rooms?

A percentage of people can be trusted to be as awful as possible, especially in an unmoderated, anonymous environment. For example, back when we were all playing world of text the rooms would fill up with "heil hitler," "faggot," and the n-bomb because of these people.

I wish something like this on such people.

Man, it's pretty bleak. I'm having trouble untangling this vandalism and it's past my bedtime. Maybe tomorrow..

I have stared into the face of purest hate. A labyrinth of unending torment and horror and the most sadistic tortures imaginable. A godforsaken hellscape called... Katt's Playground. I only escaped due to a near-miraculous random game reset.

There are only three victims still trapped in it as I type. Pray that it empties and disappears before you read this.
