A comparison between my two new cameras: The $1,800 Canon 7D versus the brand new $50 Barbie Video Girl... available in the girlie aisle of your local Toys R Us.
This is also a spoof of another video that compared the Canon 7D and iPhone 4: "iPhone 4 as good as the 7D? No, but it's amazing for what it is." link

Back in my day, the biggest advancement in Barbie technology was velcro hair.

Thanks, but I already have a camera that get a finger in the shot.
The video, though, is quite entertaining.
And the fact that this doll exists, even for $50, is AMAZING to me. And would have been really, really amazing to 10 year old me. Think back 25 years ago and sometimes my brain hurts.

Actually, I was surprised at the Barbie cam. If they hadn't fallen into the common trap of messing up the white balance such that it's always too blue, it wouldn't be half bad. Not HD, by any means, but acceptable for non-HD YouTubeish purposes. The color cast is terrible, though.

I would not be allowed to work at the Barbie Design Center.
"You know where we should put the USB port?"
"NO."
"Well, how about the batteries? I have this hilarious idea!"
"HR will be by with a cardboard box, I'll take your ID now."

And in twenty years something like the Canon 7D will be given away in Happy Meals and satirically compared to a SonyKodak AwarenessCapture-4Tz

Barbie usually ends up naked, in my limited experience. That sort of adds a new dimension to Miss Video here - just a nude doll with a lens between its boobs.

You're gonna pay 100-200% the price for a 10% increase in quality, and more than half the photographers (or videographers) will claim they can't tell the difference.
The other half will realize that, yeah, they need to shell out the money for the Cine-Xenar to get the look they need. And a bazillion internet flamewars will ensue, mostly on private mailing lists and web forums.

No, no. No child thinks this way or will absorb any of the subtle negative connotations you are reacting to.
Yeah, I think it's really neat and could encourage a lot of creativity in young girls. Failing that, wouldn't it be cool to have a bunch of home videos you made when you were 4?

Look, it will encourage little girls to be cyborgs. All the best toys I had growing up made me and other little boys want to be cyborgs or robots (or habitual steroid abusers), so to me this is a bold step forward for gender equality.

maus: "wouldn't it be cool to have a bunch of home videos you made when you were 4?"
I've been letting my niece shoot footage on my cellphone since she was six months old. By twelve months old she could make movies of herself walking along and jabbering into it like a pro. (Not long afterwards she got the hang of pressing buttons and letting her use my phone became a quick way to change the menus into Greek or run up a hug bill ringing Abu Dhabi.)
I had a vague idea about posting the footage online somewhere and inviting people to submit pretentious critiques about her use of light and shade and the deeper symbolism of the moment when she tries to chew the camera.
