Super Mario Brothers X The greatest fan game tribute to Super Mario of all time! Gameplay video here.
hat tip to tigsource!
The game first debuted on June 25, 2009 --- I'm kind of surprised Nintendo hasn't sued their asses into next year.

Holy crap, the last time I thought about SMW, they were messing around with prebeta videos. Awesome to see they released!

That split screen shit would give me a monstrous headache.
That was all I could think about until I saw the MOTHER BRAIN.
WTF?

what kind of control scheme is recommended? I can never stand using keyboards with emulators.

Thank you Mario! But the rational-world-of-gaming is in another castle!

To be fair, that does look pretty fucking awesome. Unfortunately I'm still a little disappointed, because I was hoping that Megaman : Megaman X :: Super Mario Brothers : Super Mario Brothers X. Like; slightly darker, modernized and slicked up.

Looks like they've all been eating some of the mushrooms.
But seriously, that is *awesome.* I love to see the kinds of mods people think up for games.

It's odd how the passing of time has drastically improved my FPS, puzzle, flight simulator, RTS, adventure and racing game skills while doing sweet fuck all for my Mario abilities.

I love the split screen. It was always the worst when I got dragged into a block because my asshole best-friend owned an SNES and I didn't.
Same thing happened a few years later when he always kicked my ass in goldeneye.

Ok this looks awesome and I want to play it. Is there some sort of controller you can buy and hook up to your computer? Also at 0:30 in the video, I laughed out loud.

take care when running the smbx installer; it offers to install some bullshitware called "regrevive". Hopefully that's the only antisocial thing it does.

THE SHOOOOOOOE
Whenever I play Super Mario 3, I beat World 1, get a whistle and immediately warp to World 5, where I waste the rest of my lives bouncing around on the shoe level.

Maybe try VMware? I've heard there are stripped down versions of windows designed to install under 10 minutes available in some of the shadier corners of the internet.

I have this converter and it makes things so much better. It has spots for 1 each of xbox, Gamecube, and Playstation. Plus two USB slots, one of which I use for a Logitech Playstation inspired controller.
NES works on an emulator. Genesis is OK assuming you're using a 3 button controller and that's what you're used to. 6 is doable but I never liked it. Anything else and you really just need to get a controller plugged in there.
After I wrote that I noticed that it's a standalone game and not just a ROM for a regular emulator. So if you can't use a controller and it really wants you to use the keyboard, you can always get AutoHotkey and map the controller buttons to keyboard buttons and fake it.

It works perfectly with a wired XBox 360 controller. If you don't have one, ask your local nerd.

I've gotten it to work with every controller I have hooked up. Just a matter of figuring out which controller is which number, but that's a problem on my end.
