You can tell the scene in the first live-action movie where Scooby literally punches Scrappy in the face was written with real hatred and vitriol, because face-punching normally doesn't happen in animation. Not because it's violent, but because it's fucking hard. And it's hard because, ironically, faces are soft. And squishy. And complicated. And there are parts of our brains that work really hard on recognizing faces, which makes those parts hard to fool.

I have all of The Scooby Doo Project on VHS taped off air when it was first run. It was ridiculously difficult to capture. I did not know there was an extended ending or scrappy doo involved. (Or did I? I'm old and I don't have perfect memory.)

Thank you for posting this. It's a treasure, and I'm glad to see it in a format that doesn't involve me digging out old tech and figuring out how to hook it up to a modern television.

Watched this one last year as one of the extra-credit suggestions for the #Hooptober challenge on Letterboxd last year, and thought it held up marvelously. I feel like it, and the general retro-friendly vibe of late '90s/early '00s Cartoon Network, helped build a bridge between generations when it comes to appreciating Scooby-Doo.

Or because face-punching was perfected and then run into the ground in the 1980s with GI Joe and the Transformers.

Also Scrappy Doo is a puppy, and punching a baby in the face is almost universally reviled.
