The Volcano hunter video is truly remarkable. The scale is of this boiling molten rock lake is revealed by the size of adventurer at its edge. Amazing to think that all that heat, light and power is of origin of a star billions of years ago.

I was there last week. When I got my first good look at the entire crater, the scale and almost unbearable majesty of it, I burst into tears. It was awesome, in the original sense of the word. (Of course, my camera broke right as we got to the crater, causing tears for a different reason.)

My bucket list has "see lava and an active volcano". Alas, when I was in Hawaii about 2 years ago, the crater was steaming/smoking, but no active lava flow/activity. Was really cool to hike all over the park there, but I'm teased by the new eruption details.

Okay, so the volcano hunter video looks like a bad SciFi matte shot. Probably because my brain cannot compute boiling lava on that scale.

I really enjoyed the subtle snark of the Media Guide to Volcanoes.
I wanted to go see more of the volcano national park when I was on the Big Island, but my relatives were all, "We've seen it already, we want to gooooooo" and insisted on breezing through the park in an hour. And yeah, also wanted to see lava, but the crater was barely smoking. Sadness.

Magnificent! Pele is awakening again. The lava is not the real danger to residents, however -- it is the vog that can kill.
