Lifting it's script from the abandonned fourth movie, Mad Max will be returning, sans Gibbo, as a 3D animated feature. I'll see you on the road, skag!

Now that's a coincidence. Thunderdome is about to become the new law here in America, too.

You know, Mad Max minus Mel Gibson actually sounds pretty good.

*I'm also OK with him getting horribly killed in the first three minutes of the film. same goes for Cute Little Kid in any new Indiana Jones movies.

That Mad Max / Motörhead mash-up is basically what the internet was invented for... I remembered when I first discovered it playing it about ten times in a row...

There’s going to be a hybrid anime where it shifts more towards Western sensibilities.

I'm picturing a G rating and Scrappy-Doo, but at least if my expectations are that low I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Do we really need to feed more into his persecuted messiah fetish?

Humungus: I am gravely disappointed. Again you have made me unleash my dogs of war.

I'm not going to argue with anyone on the current skank of Mel Gibson, but the Mel Gibson, head-to-toe in leather. from the Mad Max movies was total hotness.

"He doesn’t want Max himself, Mel Gibson, anywhere near the project."

Wonder why?

The world needs more silly, violent animated movies. This makes me happy.

The world that the Mad Max movies takes place in is often referred to as post-apocalyptic, but if I remember correctly, the canonical reason for the collapse of civilization given is an implied catastrophic breakdown of the world's economic system. Everything sort of stopped.

I for one am looking forward visiting Bartertown and seeing Tina Turner wearing that 80 pound chain mail dress with SUCH panache.

I think they should have drawn the series to a close.

I always thought the denizens of Mad Max's dystopic world were destined to completely drain every natural resource. Except for one last intact barrel of oil. Which Max would find, and use to self-immolate.

I do not think so, but it sure was crappy.

I think they retconned the apocalypse between the second and third film...

Yeah, the did insert some BS about "two great tribes" going to war.

Which always annoyed me. I've talked to fellow Mad Max fans who are certain that it was a nuclear war in Road Warrior but you just have to "read between the lines." Seems like most of that interpretation rests upon the back of the Great Humongous'* burned-up head. Fuck that noise.

I wonder if they'll be lifting the title from the fourth script as well: Fury Road. I hope so, because I love that title.

adamdschneider, the "two great tribes" thing was in the prologue to Road Warrior, accompanied by footage of conventional warfare, and followed up by the explanation that the (again, apparently conventional) war broke the world's economic system. Running out of energy, materials, etc...

From the first link:

3D anime “Mad Max”—awesome idea or awesomest? But will it — can it?? — be the same without Mel Gibson’s voice?

I dunno: American audiences thirty years ago saw Mad Max without Mel Gibson's voice in it. Maybe they can hire the guy who did the voice dubbing for that move to reprise the role?

I suppose it might be asking to much of someone writing a piece for the MTV website to look at, I dunno, an interview with Gibbo on the MTV website to learn enough about his subject to write eight paragraphs without an embarrassing blunder.

Comic book guy is afoot, and meanwhile, we are entering the post-money phase. This is for practice! How do people feel about entering an era in which Value is being redefined? It's not money, and its not simple and romantic, but that's what we gotta figure out here folks, what is value?
posted by stonepharisee at 5:42 PM on March 7, 2009

No Mel Gibson? Well at least we know that Mad Max won't be getting tortured nearly as much as he would be otherwise.

This sounds like a great idea. Bring it on, George Miller! Just imagine the action sequences they can do when everything is animated...

Yeah, there was a world war and Something Bad happened to the Middle East, which catapulted everybody into an instant peak oil situation. Without oil, both the the economy and the social contract in Australia collapsed, leading to Mad Max. Then the simmering war went nuclear, and that was it for civilization. I don't know if it's clear when the bombs fell, but in Thunderdome you've got people checking water with geiger counters and the whole Captain Walker thing, so it must have happened before then.

I liked all three.

There's something strangely compelling about post-apocalyptic stories.

I like reading them, but I sure as hell wouldn't want to live through them.

Actually, that's what worries me. A big part of the appeal of the action in the Mad Max movies is how practical and physical everything is. They basically took a bunch cars into the outback and smashed the living fuck out of them. I just don't know how well that will translate to animation, and this is a big proponent/apologist of CG talking here.
