Jeez. Hatching is hard work.

I was expecting something much different from that Something Awful link and was pleasantly surprised.

I remember when I was a kid my mom took some viable chicken eggs home from her work at a bio lab. They actually hatched, but even though we thought we did everything necessary to keep them alive, they all died within a few days. It was really sad. :(

You really find yourself rooting for the young 'uns.

I'm rooting for the eggs.

There's really nothing cooler than when a chick imprints on you and thinks you're its mama and then clucks with glee for the rest of its life when it sees you appear.

It's at times like this that I envy chicken sexers.

I don't know what the hell that meant.

The chat on there is like the reverse of the ripper irc-log. "Duuuude, no little dude, get up!!".

The drama everytime the big-kid chickens go over to the little one is excruciating. "No, bad chicken, run away little dude!".

My favorite part of chickens hatching is when they lay around to wait for their little feathers to get fluffy.

Wow. Does that really happen?

"Don't be surprised or alarmed if your chick follows you constantly when allowed out of its brooder. Chicks "imprint," often considering the first large object they see to be their mother."

from eHow.

My response: awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

Wow. Does that really happen?

Had it happen with a goose, the summer I went to live with my grandmother in Hope Mills, NC. Grandpa took us to the feed store and there was a pen of freshly hatched ducks and geese, buck and a quarter each.

I got a goose, my little brother got a duck. All summer, every time I went to the back yard, the goose would run up from the lake, flapping its wings and hooting. Scared the hell out of my mother when she came to pick us up at the end of the summer - geese are not small birds when full-grown.

At first I thought this was going to have something to do with all my friends... on my friends list... on Stickam. Rock on... peace out.

Every year at the Michigan State Fair the Michigan State University veterinary school has a "Miracle of Life" display. It is stocked with various farm animals about to give birth. One of the exhibits is an incubator full of eggs, much like this one. It is soooo cute to watch the expressions on the faces (and hear the exclamations) of little local kids, who've probably never been to a farm, as they watch the little chicks emerge. I was present once during the birth of a calf and even the adults were oohing and exclaiming then. (The Miracle of Life can be messy - who knew cows spewed so much afterbirth, and so projectile-y.)

Wow. Does that really happen?

Absolutely. It gets slightly less cute when your hen reaches puberty and decides that not only are you her mama, you're also her rooster, so in addition to the glee-cluck she also squats at your feet and sticks her butt up in the air any time you get within two feet of her.

I mean, it's still kind of cute in a wow-aren't-chickens-weird kind of way, but it's embarrassing to have to explain to others.

Yeah, but if you scratch her on her neck and she shakes, fluffs up her feathers, and walks off in a satisfied manner that only a hen can truly pull off.

My wife and I refer to this activity as "having sex with the chickens."

Also, it's a pain when you're trying to walk across the yard and have to spend the whole trip trying not to step on lusty chickens.

I wasn't going to admit to that part.

I AM OF THE OPINION THAT BABY BIRDS BELONG IN MY POCKETS SO THAT I CAN PULL THEM OUT LIKE GUNS AND GO "PEW PEW PEW".

THAT IS ALL.

When is a chicken's birthday? When it's laid, or when it hatches?

That's so strange, I have chickens hatching in my incubator as I type. 20 have come out so far, another 2 are 'zipping' their way out, and another has just pipped!

Heh. My hens used to squat down and stamp their feet before sticking their butts up. Like, "I want it, and I want it now!" They were well-endowed girls and you could feel the ground thudding through your shoes. Then they did the hilarious "post-coital" shake'n'fluff before strutting off regally.

Hubby was really good at scratching the right places, because they used to run over to him and stamp emphatically, whereas I got a take-it-or-leave-it saunter. Their obvious preference for Hubby inspired many tasteless cock jokes which I won't repeat (really, you had to be there).

Little ingrates. Who fed them? Who watered them? Who cleaned their damn coop of poop? And the moment a pair of twinkling blue eyes comes along they stick their butts up at him. Bah. Never trust a chicken.

Bah. Never trust a chicken.

Werner Herzog agrees, severely:

"Look into the eyes of a chicken and you will see real stupidity. It is a kind of bottomless stupidity, a fiendish stupidity. They are the most horrifying, cannibalistic and nightmarish creatures in the world."

Baby chick imprints on a finger

Baby duck imprints on a puppy

That is all awwww.

Just to say I have been glued to this for days, utterly addictive, and the total seems to be finishing up at 11 chicks happily hatched, and two that tried but didn't make it. Jhonen Vasquez (Invader Zim dude) tweeted it and for a while there were 16k visitors. For a different while there were 3k. Mostly though we been a couple hundred going awwww!
