I was expecting something much different from that Something Awful link and was pleasantly surprised.

I remember when I was a kid my mom took some viable chicken eggs home from her work at a bio lab. They actually hatched, but even though we thought we did everything necessary to keep them alive, they all died within a few days. It was really sad. :(

The chat on there is like the reverse of the ripper irc-log. "Duuuude, no little dude, get up!!".

My favorite part of chickens hatching is when they lay around to wait for their little feathers to get fluffy.

Had it happen with a goose, the summer I went to live with my grandmother in Hope Mills, NC. Grandpa took us to the feed store and there was a pen of freshly hatched ducks and geese, buck and a quarter each.
I got a goose, my little brother got a duck. All summer, every time I went to the back yard, the goose would run up from the lake, flapping its wings and hooting. Scared the hell out of my mother when she came to pick us up at the end of the summer - geese are not small birds when full-grown.

Every year at the Michigan State Fair the Michigan State University veterinary school has a "Miracle of Life" display. It is stocked with various farm animals about to give birth. One of the exhibits is an incubator full of eggs, much like this one. It is soooo cute to watch the expressions on the faces (and hear the exclamations) of little local kids, who've probably never been to a farm, as they watch the little chicks emerge. I was present once during the birth of a calf and even the adults were oohing and exclaiming then. (The Miracle of Life can be messy - who knew cows spewed so much afterbirth, and so projectile-y.)

Absolutely. It gets slightly less cute when your hen reaches puberty and decides that not only are you her mama, you're also her rooster, so in addition to the glee-cluck she also squats at your feet and sticks her butt up in the air any time you get within two feet of her.
I mean, it's still kind of cute in a wow-aren't-chickens-weird kind of way, but it's embarrassing to have to explain to others.

My wife and I refer to this activity as "having sex with the chickens."

That's so strange, I have chickens hatching in my incubator as I type. 20 have come out so far, another 2 are 'zipping' their way out, and another has just pipped!

Heh. My hens used to squat down and stamp their feet before sticking their butts up. Like, "I want it, and I want it now!" They were well-endowed girls and you could feel the ground thudding through your shoes. Then they did the hilarious "post-coital" shake'n'fluff before strutting off regally.
Hubby was really good at scratching the right places, because they used to run over to him and stamp emphatically, whereas I got a take-it-or-leave-it saunter. Their obvious preference for Hubby inspired many tasteless cock jokes which I won't repeat (really, you had to be there).
Little ingrates. Who fed them? Who watered them? Who cleaned their damn coop of poop? And the moment a pair of twinkling blue eyes comes along they stick their butts up at him. Bah. Never trust a chicken.

Just to say I have been glued to this for days, utterly addictive, and the total seems to be finishing up at 11 chicks happily hatched, and two that tried but didn't make it. Jhonen Vasquez (Invader Zim dude) tweeted it and for a while there were 16k visitors. For a different while there were 3k. Mostly though we been a couple hundred going awwww!
