Oh, if only there was a version of My Old Man by the Delta Rhythm Boys online...
Instead, we'll have to settle for the earliest cover I know, by Jim Kweskin and the Jug Band.

Inspired by the Neil Young's song of the same name, Redlight King offers a modern take on Old Man that is so good I venture that even jonmc will like it.

Electric Bonsai Band: I Am My Dad
The eyes get weakerposted by tzikeh at 1:18 PM on June 19, 2011
The cheeks get pink
The hair gets thinner, what hair still remains
I can't wear sneakers
I start to shrink
The ground gets closer with every day
And I, I, I
I am my dad
Yes I, I, I
I am my dad
(argh - that link goes to a full recording in playable form)

Steve Goodman's name came up at my house just a few minutes ago. We were watching an old Hee Haw episode on which Johnny Cash performs "City of New Orleans". I looked up to see who had written the song and it was Steve Goodman.

Steve Goodman is one of the greatest country songwriters of the past fifty years, and that's saying something. He's truly a noble soul wrapped up a goofy guy's body, but man oh man can he write a song.

I know – leukemia, wasn't it? Still love the spin on chemotherapy that the cover of his "Artistic Hair" record gave. A great man, Steve Goodman.
