The Lick (slyt).
How many licks does it take to get to funky jazz center of instrumental pop? 1-ee-and-a-2 and-3.

that pattern of notes isn't just a lick, it's a slurp!

Well, that's just because it's a fast and simple way to move from I to ii, which is more than a little bit common in jazz and related musics.

(It works nicely, too, as a pointed way of demonstrating you're in Dorian mode, while throwing in a nifty blue note.)

sadly the Music Ngram search results weren't as mindblowing as I hoped they would be (I'm convinced now that every search string returns a result in the Pachelbel Canon in D.....)

Meh. I was hoping for a post about actual licking, instead.

I just realized you can sing the words "Never gonna give you up" to that lick. (In fact, the first four notes match that earworm.) Curses! Rick Rolled Again!!!

Fluters and violiners making "I'm soloing" faces are hilarious.

You've been Rick Rolled by FPP mystery meat. It's a spoof and a goof. Gotcha!

The guy who posted the video mentioned a Facebook group of the same name, and said he built this video from a discussion there. But surely there's at least one other person on the planet who has chosen not to be on Facebook, and would like a simple listing of the tunes referenced, is there such a list somewhere?

I think this is the Facebook group he's referring to. There isn't a concise list, just a long series of individual posts. You don't seem to need a FB account to view the page.
