The Single Lane Superhighway

The Single Lane Superhighway is a simple website that lets you draw a car and join the parade of other drawn cars already on the road. Simple, yet sweetly engaging. Another interesting art project from Aaron Koblin, who has done several other notable social/data art projects (some of this, some of that, and some other things). Via waxy.

It's cute and all but..."awaiting approval"? So maybe my car will be approved...when? I'll just need to check back tomorrow? Next week? And my car will be there among how many others?

Yeah, I don't know if the approval lag is due to the website's owner being elsewhere or because the site is being slammed with requests, but either way it renders this unusable. Flagged. If this FPP is deleted, maybe repost in a week or two when the website isn't simultaneously being hit by everybody who reads Waxy. It seems like a neat idea.

in the span of about 20 seconds I saw both the 4chan Party Van and an Imperial Star Destroyer. That pretty much sums up the internet, I guess.

... Red Clover, just because you can't see your picture on the website doesn't mean it's a terrible post. See also: All the other fricking posts about artists, community art, etc, where (get this) you also can't see your artwork

Why? I just assumed you don't get to see your own car on the road unless you're very lucky, but you do get see what others have contributed and others will get to see yours, so long as there's nothing offensive/nsf kids. Which I found perfectly charming, and I quite enjoyed watching the parade for awhile.

There were some very nice vehicles there. I spoiled that by contributing.

oh hey if you click on a car it will draw it for you :)

I am shamed by the many, many well-drawn, interesting cars. Mine all look like lumps of gravy.

I drew Wile E. Coyote chasing the Road Runner.

I saw a person on a segway.

Apparently I draw a car the same way many people learned how to draw a car. We're the box people.
Mine is called "O hai" and it's the one without wheels because I didn't realize you were supposed to draw wheels lol.

My favorite ones so far are the creeping dinosaur skeleton and the two people chasing each other.

this one gets to the point. I like that, when you actually view it the designer tried something else, erased it, and then drew what you finally see.

Also, this was pretty brilliant.

yay, my banana-car was approved! but I'm totally jealous of whoever did lowly. A much better Richard Scary-mobile than mine.

Lowly is my girlfriend's creation, we've been giving her Wacom tablet a workout on this site. Way too much fun.

We've done quite a few so far, but only a few have been accepted to the Great Commute. We both drew face cars that didn't make the cut, and I suggested that there is probably an algorrithm filtering for potentially naughty submissions. So, in the interests of science, my girlfriend is submitting as many Boobiemobiles as she can.

FWIW I just drew one and saw it adorably driving along the first time I reloaded the page.

This made me laugh so uncontrollably that my hubby actually had to come over and look at the screen. He walked away again, registering absolutely no response.

Great, now all week I'll be walking around thinking "Oh! That would be a great car idea!" This could be trouble.

My favorite contributions are the non-car modes of transportation, such as the flying carpet, the rickshaw, and the two unicyclists.

For the record, I've contributed Autobot Jazz, Luke's landspeeder (although I wasn't the only one), and a space shuttle on a crawler.

One side effect is that weird post-warping effect, like with Guitar Hero.

11,383 now - that's over 1,000 vehicles a day.

This thread will close soon, so I'll just put this updated vehicle count here - "There are more than 22,000 cars on the highway right now."
