My Little Pony’s Lauren Faust on how Super Best Friends Forever will make you love Batgirl and Supergirl all over again. The short animations will be part of Cartoon Networks DC Nation block, alongside Beware The Batman, the replacement for the late lamented Batman: The Brave and the Bold.

Last weeks saw the final Brave and The Bold comic as well... Also the awesome Tiny Titans has been cancelled (boo!), but that does mean we get this: Superman Family Adventures.

“We went in deeper into the villain library and pulled out some other villains,” Register said

Its "rogues gallery," goddammit.

I really, really hope BtB will be as fun as BtaB. If there is one thing WB have proven time and time again is that they can make some really dull cartoons regardless of the quality of the source material. A Grant Morrison premise can't save shitty writing.

There's a pretty good panel discussion here on writing action adventure cartoons, inclsuing a lot on Brave and the Bold:

Pyg is... not exactly the villain I'd have picked for a kid-friendly show. Not by kind of a long way. On the other hand I love the horrible bastard and I'm fascinated to see what level of chemically bonded doll masks and barbed wire mothers they incorporate, where I probably wouldn't even have watched an episode otherwise, so there's that.

I love the art Faust's shown from Super Best Friends Forever - at 'just over a minute' I kind of imagine them being over before they've started, but maybe if they're awesome it'll get turned into some sort of longer-form superladies thing, which would rule.

I must admit I am a little confused as to why they are not just throwing money at her and begging her to make a full length show right now.

Lauren Faust has blown our minds with her work on Powerpuff Girls and My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.

I like how no one every mentions Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends.

No, seriously, I like it. So much shouting.

I think given the number of things from MLP the bronies have conspired to make real, they've got to be afraid of legions of twentysomething dudes on the streets armed with truth lassos, magic tiaras and bat shark repellent.

Well, there's been at least one magic tiara in MLP:FIM, but we haven't replicated it yet.

Tonight at dinner my preschool-aged daughter explained to us that the difference between a horse and a pony is that a horse lives on a farm and a pony lives in a castle.

Tell it to Applejack.

The Supergirl: Cosmic Adventures in the Eight Grade series was one of my favorite things in recent years. If Lauren Faust can capture some of the joy and fun of that series, then I'm completely sold.

I haven't been happy about any news coming out of, related to, or referencing DC Comics characters in a really long time. This is really exciting.

Her shorts won't be the only ones. Other minor DC COmics characters will get their time to shine, including Plastic Man.

oh my god I love that Wonder Woman costume.

Apparently Wonder Woman weighs about 35 lbs.

When did I ever fall out of love with Supergirl and Batgirl?

Oh, right: never.

Also, that's Wonder Girl's costume. And don't you forget it.

I really hope it turns out something like this or this.

Oh, man. Batgirl looks so damned excited to be a superhero. I love her already.

I'm most worried that the best segments (Super BFFs, Plasticman, the chibi-style Teen Titans) are going to be ONE MINUTE each, while the Green Lantern lighting gets half of the one-hour timeslot. The current line of printed comics are 'The 52', not the '44 minutes after commercials'. One Hour does not even qualify to be called a BLOCK. The minimum timeslot for a Block should be two hours. MINIMUM.

And while you're at it, Cartoon Network, give MAD a half-hour of its own every week. (It's better than the printed version these days, but that also applied to Batman:B&B)

I feel a little cynical about all these amazing shorts they are putting on as part of the block, mostly because I think these are the kinds of people who should be in charge of the shows. Also the art of the CG Batman cartoon looks eerily reminiscent of "The Batman", which was a pretty flawed show.

Hopefully I'm speaking too soon, as there are definitely some very talented people on the new Batman, but I wish they would just stick with the ones that worked for a little longer or put someone like Lauren in charge of the whole thing.

Why does every new cartoon have to look like it was drawn by Genndy Tartakovsky?
posted by pashdown at 5:59 AM on February 22, 2012

Partly because Flash animation really lends itself to that look, and partly because it's all the same people doing it, I would think.

(FWIW I'll take it over cheap CGI or anime-inspired cell animation any day)

I've got the GL stuff bought by the season on iTunes but I'm not seeing this stuff yet. Sadface.

Yeah, when I heard that Lauren Faust was working on a DC superheroines cartoon, I did a literal fist-pump.

When I heard that each episode was one minute long, my face when.
