I for one, really liked memepool. That MetaFilter site allowed for unhinged and mostly unfiltered commentary from the masses - which I did not like one bit. Plus, if I wanted to join that, 5 bucks? Are you out of your mind? And who were these mods - thinking they could censor and censure their members? And cat scans? Come on - that's your first best of the web? Are you f*ing kidding me?

Memepool's previous last post: April 21,2008
Me joining MetaFilter: November 25, 2008

The two things had a lot to do with each other... It took about 2 months of waiting to realize it wasn't coming back, and a month of vacant nothingness before I turned to Metafilter. Reading MetaFilter was the best of the web with comments, but reading memepool had been the best of the best of the web without comments...

But joining MetaFilter is like a drug - hey - might as well get your 5 bucks worth and comment...

And at some point, the concept of comments cease to be comments and it becomes community - a community which I should have been originally less adverse to, from a concept, a price, and a content perspective. If memepool came back, I think I'm done with it. This is more my thing these days.

So that's some honesty. And I am sorry I misjudged this site. I owe at minimum, an apology for that.

I dunno, perhaps it's because I found this place via Memepool, but I still see MetaFilter as a place to read 'a curated list of awesome things'. Being able to comment (and post) is a boon, but it's really all about the links for me.

On a more blog-like note, One Thing Well is a fantastic collection of pointers to good modest software.

I miss memepool too.

So, to set some context: When I wrote memepool, there was no RSS, no MySQL. The word "weblog" hadn't been coined yet. etc.

So, I wrote my own in-memory database, items don't have permalinks, there were dozens of problems.

Then, it became very easy for people to have their own blogs - so having editorial curation was an impediment. Why write when it might get rejected per the style guide? Etc etc etc.

Then having to write entire paragraphs were too hard. (Even for me. I wrote Muxway and ultimately Delicious because of this. In a very real sense, Delicious is also a child of memepool.)

A bunch of stylistic choices (no comments, no via links, etc) really impacted the engagement of the site as well.

So if I were to resurrect it, I'd really like to do something that is the best at what it is. And that means not being BoingBoing, Metafilter, Delicious, Reddit, etc.

It may take me some more time to actually figure out what to do. But I still think about it and am hopeful.

memepool and kuro5hin were my early Internet friends. I think my attraction to io9 and the other gawker properties, years ago mind, was they tried to capture some of that new, edgy, "hey kids! links!" mindset.

But now jezebel, etc are ugly and hard to navigate. kuro5hin is like usenet 2.0. reddit is like 4chan without images.

All I can say is: Metafilter: it's the Internet that's OK to like. Bless you, mathowie! And bless jessamyn and all of the other mods, past and present. If Mefi is, in some sense, a walled garden, then bless the toilers in these gardens.

That is too bad. Memepool was one of the best sites on the internets at the time because of the quality of the links. The Internet has matured in a way that seems to have reduced the number of fun and offbeat sites despite the overall growth, sort of like the difference from pirate radio to commercial radio. The meaning, or at least the connotations of the word "meme" has changed a lot in that time as well.

One thing that kind of sucks about going back and reading really old links is that so many of the links are dead. One 'feature' of a new mempool might be to archive all the stuff you link too, so you can go back and actually see what was on the web years prior.
