A Many that allows itself to be thought of as a One

This post was deleted for the following reason: Man, a post about set theory would be awesome and a post that was actually like a substantial, researched look at the story behind A Beka's specific argument against set theory would be maybe worth doing too, but this blog post is just kind of splitting the difference in away that seems like a setup for a thread full of unfocused GRAR. -- cortex

Can't they just reject the axiom of choice and be done with it? Of course, this makes certain parts of linear algebra an affront to God, but I am actually completely ok with that idea.

Oh man, I learned math from A Beka and this is gonna be awesome. I don't think they objected to set theory back then, although I'll admit I didn't read even the assignments that closely, let alone the introduction.

Oh wow, A Beka is the publishing arm of Pensacola Christian College, home of "eye babies".

dogemperor is a great source for learning about dominionists and the anti-intellectual bullshit they're trying to foist on the world around them. Here's what he had to say about Christian fundamentalists and the A Beka curriculum back in 2005.

Of course this is not at all surprising to anyone who has been paying close attention: Christian fundamentalists are in favor of education that supports their worldview, rather than that which challenges and informs it. Further (required) reading: Charlie Pierce's book, Idiot America. I did an FPP on it a couple of years ago, that included the lengthy essay from 2005 in Esquire it was based on.

I thought it was going to be because that Venn diagram looked vaguely like a butt pooping.

The thing about teaching that Nessie is real in order to beef up claims about humans and dinosaurs coexisting is one thing, and it makes sense to me (also: I got previously'd!), but the set theory thing seems waaaaay out there. The rationale given in the Boing Boing article makes sense, given what I know about the fundamentalist worldview (read: not much), but it still seems so completely insane that I can't really wrap my head around it, despite having read the article.

How is this surprising? There are Christian fundamentalists who have taken their school districts to court for teaching critical thinking!
