Mannerheim: General of the Czar, Marshal of Finland [1/9] (In Russian, with English subtitles)

Baron Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim (4 June 1867 -- 27 January 1951) was the military leader of the Whites in the Finnish Civil War, Commander-in-Chief of Finland's Defence Forces during World War II, Marshal of Finland, and a Finnish statesman. He was Regent of Finland (1918--1919) and the sixth President of Finland (1944--1946).

When Finland was at war with the Soviet Union during 1939--1944, Mannerheim successfully led the defence of Finland as commander-in-chief of the country's armed forces.

The narrator speaks in Finnish, but there are quite a few people speaking in Swedish too.

I was half expecting this FPP to have something to do with the fictional film about Mannerheim that came out a few months ago. It caused quite a stir, as it was a joint Finnish-Kenyan production with Gilbert Lukalia, a black actor, in the title role as the Marshall of Finland. Trailer.

Mannerheim is so reverd by many in Finland. My granny still has a portrait of him on her wall... When the museum of contemporary art, Kiasma, was built in Helsinki in the 90s, a bitter dispute raged for a good while about whether it was too close to the equestrian statue of Mannerheim (which naturally could not. be. moved. one. inch), only to be overshadowed by the holy hell that broke loose when a temporary hot pink fence was built around the the construction site. Because, sacrilege! In the end, the stretch of fence closest to Mannerheim had to be painted a respectable shade of gray to appease the public outcry...
