There goes another one of my childhood memories. Oh, I was so easily entertained back then.

Wow, this almost loaded on my iPhone 4, which is really impressive. It is unfortunate that I am about as bad at RTSes as I can be at a video game.

Is there anything similar to the original Dune game? I know Dune II is this milestone in RTS, but I really liked the adventure-strategy game that preceded it. And it had a killer soundtrack.

My friend had a copy of this sophomore year in college and played endlessly. I always got too stressed by it and played Civ instead.
Thanks for the memory.

I played this game quite a lot on my Amiga back when I had time to do things like play games quite a lot. I loved it, but couldn't get past level 6 and never played an RTS again.

I loved Dune II back in the day. I was fond of House Ordos, but found that I had a hell of a time in the later levels unless I was playing as Harkonnen. I think the only House with which I managed to beat the game was Harkonnen.

(Hmm, was the game always this sluggish? Doesn't seem super playable in the browser for me.)

Everything was going well until a worm ate my quadcycle. Then the whole map flipped out and nothing worked anymore. Does that authentically invoke the original play experience?

Well, from my admittedly vague memories of playing the Sega CD version, I think King of Dragon Pass might scratch the same itch.
Available in (actively maintained) iOS and (as it was when it was released 13 years ago) PC flavors.

Damn. I spent almost the whole December making a post based on this and the history of RTS in the 90s before my text file was corrupted and abandoning it. Major GRAR.
In short, Command & Conquer, Red Alert and Tiberian Sun are free, there is an insider account of the making of Dune II (the link downloads an htm file; there's a google cache floating around the web too), there are a few mods and remakes (google), there is a remake of Herzog Zwei, Dark Reign was released on XBLA last year but the developer page is down and there are quite a few retrospectives and Top 100 spots for Dune II and a couple for Herzog Zwei. There are previous links on MeFi for Total Annihilation remakes, its soundtrack is still the best, Homeworld was the first really 3D RTS but although the source code was released a remake has stalled and Starcraft still rocks. Microsoft/Ensemble has scraped any and all signs of Age of Empires (II), unfortunately. I hadn't saved any links, but that was the gist of it.
Carry on. /posterity

I've beaten that game as Atreides and Harkonnan. Finally I can bring House Ordos to rule Arrakis!
