If you ever wondered if Mario needed achievements, it turns out the answer is no.
Fabulous animating skills, though.

The top YouTube comment from the First Person Mario is pretty neat:
If you pause at about 0:09 when mario's head covers the whole screen, you'll see princess peach :D

Huh. I always imagined the levels in Super Mario Brothers as more or less flat ground, not a 1 block wide platform suspended in the sky.

Some Turkish dude with the right moustache in my local supermarket had gotten himself a Mario hat and a red shirt and looked the spitting image; everybody was looking at him.

Because it's a 2D side-scrolling platform game! I know you're probably joking, and I know I'm getting all "kids and their hyperrealistic 3D sandbox worlds these days," but I grew up filling in the gaps between chunky 8 bit pixels with my imagination. The forward/back limitation was an implicit restriction of the platform; Forget Super Mario Brothers, how about Castlevania? Were the rooms in Dracula's castle only 3 feet wide?
These are really well done, but they just make me want to go play the original versions.

Has anyone done the opposite? It might be amusing to see a 2D Tomb Raider, or maybe a side-perspective NES Duck Hunt.

It's been done with Portal. Though not level for level recreations.

Yep. It turns out to be a rare example of a spite castle. Like this place but on a grander scale. Simon Belmont was clandestinely hired by the Transylvanian Homeowners Association after its lawsuit against Dracula failed.

This looks much more polished than this 2010 version of the same concept using the Half Life engine (with the obligatory crowbar). Goomba == Headcrab seems like a fairly natural translation.

Although it looks like this new version is just rendered in 3D Max, not a playable game, unlike the Half Life mod.

Reminds me of Jumping Flash. I'm kind of surprised the "look down when you jump" first person platforming thing wasn't bigger in the PS/N64 era. It's clunky but I recall it seeming very nifty at the time, and plenty of first person games of that generation still ended up shoehorning in lots of awkward platforming anyway, just without being able to see where the hell you were going to land.
