Ricky Gervais In His Bath

Ricky Gervais: a one shtick pony.

This reminds me of that scene in House of Cards where Robin Wright is talking on her phone in the bathtub. People use their smartphones in the bath? Don't they worry about dropping it? Makes me anxious just thinking about it.

For Ricky Gervais, though, this is awfully G-rated. I was fearing something more, uh, colorful.

He repeatedly uses the #funny tag with reference to these images.

I follow his twitter and have always wondered how the whole bathface thing started.

Here's some more exposition on his hobby on Conan.

That was excellent!.

So, ok, wait. I watched the Conan video, and then there are the other like "related, recommended" videos at the end of that, and it looked like he had been on a few other shows? Plugging this....this tumblr blog? Seriously? I mean, I like the guy and all, but really? Famous guy takes pictures of self in bathtub, the tour? I used to joke about superfans buying "The Beatles Fart Xmas Tunes, Vols 1-5" but we have surely just about achieved this nadir.

He could be funny if he wanted...but he's no Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, or Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

Seth McFarlane is kicking himself for not thinking of this first. Uh, both the bathtub and the farting stuff.

It's nice but not as good as Will Sasso Lemon Vines

I don't understand this bathtub thing or the "funny" faces, honestly. I love The Office and love him on the podcasts/radio show, but I don't get why he has such a fixation on this.

I really don't like Will Sasso, but that was hilarious.

I like him too, but this is by far the most annoying thing about following him on twitter. And now it's on metafilter as well. Maybe the weakest link ever posted on metafilter. I'm not saying that to be mean. I'm actually impressed.

I both think it's hilarious, and wonder what epoch of civilization we've reached that "I take funny pictures of myself in the bath" is a project that deserves more conversation than just, "Ha."

Count me as another fan of Gervais' comedy- his standup and TV shows notably (his Hollywood movies were kind of flat, but power to him for giving it a go).

Anyway, I love this. It's just so absurd. I think he gets a kick out of sending this weirdness out into the world, knowing that most people will think it's just so, so stupid.

when i saw him talk about it on graham norton i'm pretty sure he was there for another reason and he also talked about the tub pictures. i don't think he's going around to promote the tumblr. i happen to think it's hilarious. of course, i also like danny devito's troll feet posts.

Huh. I really like Will Sasso, but I just don't get this. And it probably wouldn't be as disturbing if what was projected from his mouth was limited to just the lemon.

Whoa-ho-ho, careful how you throw that phrase about - I'd hate for you to be proved wrong...

I love the way it's become fashionable to hate on Gervais. The guy cracks me up. But then I'm British, so he would.

Eh, I find him to be hit or miss, but on the otherhand I don't think anyone needs to defend him from haters. His comedy clearly works for a lot of people, given his success.

Sadly true, men just aren't funny. For every Louis CK, there are two Sarah Silvermans.

I love the way it's become fashionable to hate on Gervais.

The thing is, The Office was brilliant, but it worked not just because of Gervais, but also the strong cast he had around him, as the success of the US version also shows. Yet it was he who got the most credit for it and he has been coasting a lot on it ever since. Extras was still good but again was due to a strong cast as much as Gervais himself, as well as a lot of famous faces willing to make fun of themselves. Which, to his credit, is something he's good at, getting Hollywood megastars to act the fool.

Unfortunately, it turns out the character he played on The Office was more or less himself and he turned out to be somewhat of a clueless asshole in real life too (e.g. the whole mong twitter controversy), a bit like when people realised that Jimmy Carr doesn't just play an obnoxious rightwing comedian, he actually believes some of the things he said...

So he's a bit obnoxious, hasn't done anything really interesting since his early successes and is able to get on Conan just to promote his Tumblr; it's no wonder he's hated on.

The Office was great. Extras was pretty good. Derek was interesting and rather gutsy. Gervais's stand up is pretty funny. His radio show was occasionally hilarious. Your portrayal of him as a one-trick pony is fashionable, but incorrect. Oh, and his star-shredding turns at the Golden Globes were terrific.

The wife dragged me to see "Bridesmaids" and it was a much funnier movie when I pretended that the Melissa McCarthy character was actually played by Ricky Gervais.
