A framerate draws near!

Dragon Quest X is on its way to Windows later this year, and they've released perhaps the most charming benchmark ever (download is the green button about halfway down for those who can't read Japanese) so you can see if your computer can run it.
For those who lack the hardware and / or impetus to download, install, and run it, here is a Youtube video of it.

All that made me think was that I need to make a smile and eyes for my thinking putty. Maybe out of that air-drying rubber stuff?

Now, I've only played Dragon Quests I, II (Unfinished), and III (Just started), all on Gameboy, but there is no way a metal slime would still be around. Those things run faster then Micheal Bailey did.

That was pretty adorable. Thanks for the YouTube link. Chilling in Linux and didn't want to reboot.

Haven't played since the first few either. When did Dragon Quest become full of cartoonish things that dance and move and express like they're a bit mentally deficient?

anarch:
Blame Toriyama. His art style was always goofy looking, the low resolution of the original Nintendo hid it.

Probably VIII on PS2, which is when the series made the move to animated character models, I think.
Yuji Hori has stated that he was inspired to create Dragon Quest from playing the original Wizardry on an Apple II. Now Sir-Tech's Wizardry is a rapidly receding memory, and DQ has made it to PCs.

Interestingly, DQ X is out on Wii and Wii-U in Japan, but not in the US. Is a shame, it'd be one of the more interesting games on the system if it were out here.

We loved DQ8 all to pieces, even going up against the dragon gods at the very end. That said, I don't know if I have the patience any more for that amount of grinding.
I really wanted to love DQ9 on the DS, especially with its co-op feature, but it just felt so, so grindy. I still harbour a delusion that I'll get back to my character at some point.
This was a very cute demo, though!

I'm with seanmcpuckett. Well - I only ever played the first DQ and never got very far. In the end, I love the adorableness of a lot of JRPGs, and I love the worlds they paint (far more than the typical western Tolienesque style games), but I just can't stand the grind.
Ya know - it would be interesting to see Squeenix team up with BiowarEA to make a JRPG graphical style, but Bioware play-style game. Pause and issue commands. Oh man, I would buy the fucking hell out of that in a heart beat! MAKE IT SO!

DQ8 was a great game, and I enjoyed DQ9 but it was really grindy. Too bad they're making this one an MMO.

That's one adorable benchmark, but it's surprising how low-res the textures are, considering the engine seems to be doing a lot of fancy ambient occlusion and stuff like that.

JRPGs haven't changed much in the last twenty years...

No, *this* JRPG hasn't changed much in 20 years. Dragon Quest is known for its strict adherence to tradition.
But that means, while Final Fantasy has chased gonzo play mechanics and artistic pretension and abandoned any pretense to simulation and is peopled by amnesiac anime teens with piles of angst and huge swords, Dragon Quest has remained simple and charming. I'll admit to having quite a bit of fondness for it.
