Symposium Magazine bills itself as "where academia meets public life". Its promotes long-form, accessible articles about a variety of topics.
If you liked this, you might also enjoy The Conversation - currently it has an Australian focus, but there is a UK version in beta, and a US version coming soon, I understand.

One contribution states that, "[i]f politicians decide that they can judge the merit of cutting-edge research, then the peer review system is at risk." Seems hard to reconcile this with any desire to meet public life.

Well, if you want to meet the public, or its representatives, wouldn't you want to hear about what they do and what they do not want to support?
