Showdown of the Original Songs
July 18, 2013 11:10 AM   Subscribe

The term EGOT, popularized by 30 Rock, refers to winning an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony award. Only eleven people have done it. Composer Alan Menken, just nominated for an Emmy, could become the 12th. 30 Rock, oddly enough, happens to be nominated in the same category.

Menken has won 8 Oscars but this is his first Emmy nomination, for a song from The Neighbours (that I can't find on youtube). 30 Rock is up for The Rural Juror. Other songs in the category are from Smash (I Heard Your Voice in a Dream and Hang the Moon), Nashville (Nothing In This World Will Ever Break My Heart Again) and the 2012 Tonys (If I Had Time).

Complete list of Emmy nominations here [PDF].

I won't be truly impressed until someone achieves the WEEGOT, which also includes a Webby and an ESPY.

One on hand, I love to see people do things like run the gambit with EGOTs, Grand Slams, Triple Crowns, etc.

On the other hand, "Rural Juror" winning would be, maybe, the best tribute to 30 Rock there could be.

On a third cloned hand coming out of my abdomen, Tatiana Mansly was robbed so I'm boycotting the Emmys this year.

This got me wondering if there was a porn award. Apparently there is, and somehow it lacks a nickname like the Oscar or Tony or Emmy. I suppose "the Jack" would be too obvious?

Until there's another Emmy topic, I guess I'll just have to complain here that Tatiana Maslany wasn't nominated for Orphan Black. For crying out loud, she plays like six of the most interesting characters on tv this year.

I wonder if there are explicit criteria for judging a category like "best song." I mean, is it "made the greatest overall contribution to the episode it appeared in" or is it simply "was an excellent song that happened to have been composed for a TV episode." Because those are very, very different questions to ask yourself about a song. "Rural Juror" is hilarious in context, but I doubt anyone dials it up on their iPod. "Rural Juror" is also (deliberately) musically trite; the wit is in the wordplay (and the delivery).

Tatiana Maslany

Man, not nominating TM for an emmy is like the greatest publicity coup for Orphan Black imaginable. Somehow I'd totally missed hearing about that show until the emmy nominations came out. It probably still wouldn't be on my radar if she had been nominated, but all the howls of outrage have really piqued my interest.

MCMikeNamara: On a third cloned hand coming out of my abdomen, Tatiana Mansly was robbed so I'm boycotting the Emmys this year.

I'm not yet quite cynical enough to say something like "This one snub proves that the Emmys are bullshit" because I don't know how the voting works, I have no idea what kinds of politics are involved behind the scenes in how nominations happen, and I haven't actually seen probably 80% of all of the nominated shows...But good crap is she good on Orphan Black. Good crap almighty.

For Loren Bouchard, television shows are merely a means to write oddball little jingles (see Lucy, Daughter of the Devil as well).

elizardbits: "Hannibal was robbed and I am upset."

I'm just glad it was renewed. Bryan Fuller doesn't have the best track record with that. Although from what I read, Hannibal pre-sold to so many foreign territories at such a high rate that it may have made money for the production company before they even got a check from NBC. So presumably, it would have continued somewhere.

Tatiana Maslany should win for Best Leading Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Supporting Actress.

Hmmm. That raises an interesting question. Actors are nominated for specific roles, no? Presumably that means you could, in fact, be nominated separately for two (or more) roles in the same show. But might that be part of why Tatiana Maslany didn't get nominated? That she essentially split her vote?

Surprisingly, Gore isn't even one of the 12 billed producers (including executive producers, line producers, etc.). He only has a writing credit.

And to get back on topic: Three of the top 12 shows (drama or comedy) are network (unless you count PBS). Three. All of them in the comedy category. Miniseries or movie: zero network. The best Outstanding Series category for the networks was reality shows, where each of the Big Four got a single nomination.

Netflix has more lead-actor (male and female) nominations than ABC. Every nomination for Best Lead Male Actor in a Miniseries or Movie was from HBO. Network television isn't even dead, because dead people can win Emmys.

Actors submit themselves for consideration, so presumably, TM submitted herself for Outstanding Lead Actress.

Considering how outstanding her work was, and with people like Tim Goodman at THR and Michael Ausiello at TVLine being so, so vocal in their support for her, I really thought she had a shot at a nomination.

And when you play multiple roles do you submit yourself for "Outstanding Lead Actress in the Roles of..." or do you pick one of the roles you play or what?

But might that be part of why Tatiana Maslany didn't get nominated? That she essentially split her vote?

There's a good description of the process here, but no one voted for "Tatiana Maslany as Sarah Manning" or "Tatiana Maslany as Cosima Niehaus." She might have been able to pull off separate nominations for Lead and Supporting in her various personae, but the Academy would likely have stepped on that early in the process, if unofficially.

More likely, what happened is that she's on a sci-fi show seen by less than half a million people in the U.S. -- note that no other Lead Actor nominations went to genre shows, unless you count American Horror Story and Bates Motel.

It doesn't look like they bother defining what is best, but this category is "Outstanding Original Music & Lyrics", and the songs have to have clearly audible and intelligible lyrics. So I think they weigh lyrics pretty heavily.
