Oops, I flagged this as a double by mistake, it was actually just posted as a comment in this thread. Sorry for jumping the gun, mods.

The neighbors molly mule across the fence next door runs and plays with my heeler for hours. Nose touching, leaping into the air, mad dashes are all part of the play. Great fun is had by all (except for the high pitched puppy bark that gets annoying fast)

Fortunately the molly is tolerant, as my john mule would kick her over the fence in a heartbeat.

I like that they are friends of each other, but I wonder if the horse just views the dog as a small, rambunctious horse. I know the dog is sure that that is a great big dog.

Are "Molly" and "John" just the names of male and female mules? Or are they different breeds?

google is hard

OK, I had no idea that horses could lay down.

DigDoug: A Molly mule is female, and a John mule is male. Lazy people might name them Molly and John, but then they probably don't have more than one of each.

A mule is a mule is a mule, but the molly next door had an Appaloosa horse mother and a jackass father, and is spotted, while my john mule had a Quarter Horse mother and a jackass father, and is a bay--plain brown. Mules are hybrids and sterile 99.99% of the time.

The molly mule had a jackass (species) father, but often acts like a jackass (temperament) herself. My Brodie, of course, is a paragon of mule virtue--mostly.

dfriedman: All equines can lock their knees to stand up to sleep, but they need a certain percentage of sleep laying down to be healthy. Three of my critters will lay down to sleep while the fourth stands watch to keep away lions and tigers. (we have no lions and tigers here, so it must work.) The horses don't much trust the mule to stand watch--not sure if that's because he's a mule, or if it's because he's the most recent addition to the herd.

I would watch a Lucy and Whiskey Brown movie. Someone call Disney!

Damn, that was so beautiful that I almost started crying. It blows my mind that a horse would expose it's vulnerable belly like that while there is an animal that is basically a wolf right near it.
