I remember seeing him perform this when I was a kid and found out he absolutely wasn't lip synching, because he had a coughing fit in the middle of the song.

Awesome! This song just ripped me from my couch in 2013 and sent me back to the 1970's. My mom must have listened to this like crazy.

Ah, memories.
As mentioned before, my mother was a huge Lou Rawls fan. Not long after I got out of college, Rawls released Portrait of the Blues, an album in which he covered a number of classic blues songs. I got for my mom for Mother's Day, and still listen to it when I find myself missing her.
Rawls' pop songs like You'll Never Find and Groovy People were in the music background of my '70s childhood, but my mother was a contemporary of Rawls, and grew up hearing him do a very different sound. If you like Lou Rawls, grab a copy of Portrait. It was my mom's favorite Rawls album.
