The Rubberbandits (previously) present their new song, 'Dads Best Friend'. (SLYT)

A bit flat and lacking musically compared to their older stuff.

I still think the best thing they ever did was Song For Willie O'Dea. (Background: Willie O'Dea is a Limerick politician who was forced to resign after he falsely accused a rival candidate's brother of running a brothel, then signed an affidavit denying he'd made the allegation)

"Horse Outside" is on my sing-along list. The video of this is compelling, but I agree that the song is a bit one-dimensional.

I think it needs to be musically flat to reflect the dull, seething grey fury of your dad's best friend.

Something about this really got me. I think I've worked with this man.

Yup, this guy is so recognisable to me - I know several versions of him (female as well as male, incidentally). Perhaps it's an Irish thing, some post Celtic tiger middle class midlife ennui. They have nailed the barely restrained anger and overall sense of entitlement. Bleugh.

As an aside, I find it hilarious that people outside Ireland can comprehend The Rubberbandits. I lived in Limerick for four years and I still need subtitles.

Agree that the song wouldn't work without the video. Still, excellent work.

If anyone is particularly fond of the music you can hear something eerily similar by The Knife called Full of Fire from last year. It's slightly less aggressive (which is an odd thing to say about The Knife, usually).

I can't say what I think of this just now. It scared the shit out of me, though, which I appreciate.

I have shared past Rubberbandits with everyone I know (there's a sizable contingent of Omahans who will occassionally shout "Leprechaun! I'm not a sneeeeeaaak!")

This video I think I will keep for myself, as i can't imagine it being widely appreciated.

Its sort of an Irish Ween, no?

did...did he just successfully rhyme "say" and "beer"?

this is daaaaaaaaark, and the blankness matches the lyrics. it's not even comedy anymore.

Yes, something about the suppressed fury and the meanness of scope of his hedonism scream 'Suburban Ireland' to me. There are countless guys like this in Cork too, getting hammered and angry in the Woodford or the Crane on a Saturday night.

Awesome, reminded me of some of Cathal Coughlan's work.

First I thought, "Oh no, not the (feckin) Rubberbandits again"... I'd figured they were past their sell-by date. Glad to see I was wrong! Some great sinister overtones here.

I didn't think this was funny until I watched it for the tenth time.
I love the acting by Bryan Quinn.

Can somebody please please provide the lyrics? I feel I'm missing too much!

You're providing me with the perfect procrastination aid, Omnomnom, thanks ;)

Ahem..

Bootcut Jeans, salmon shirt,
I have a skin routine and my elbows hurt.
I don't give blood... because I won't give blood.

Bought a tarantula from a Swedish guy
He helped me out in Stockholm with a DUI
And I stalk Ian Brown when he comes to town

I stole cocaine off my nephews friend
I did it with the fellas at the A.G.M.
And Eleanor from A&R refused me again,
so I did that thing at the Holiday Inn

My wife sells cheese on the Internet -
I think about her sister when we're intimate.
Her family and friends, they don't like me anymore,
cause I threatened all her brothers with an antique sword

I'm your dad's best friend, your dad's best friend
We're taking him to Holland for the long weekend
He never had a stag, he never had a stag,
We're taking him to Amsterdam and making him a man

Your dad's best friend, your dad's best friend,
We're doing ketamine up in the Netherlands.
He never had a stag, he never had a stag,
I'm taking him to Amsterdam and buying him a bag.

I watch gay porn in my garden shed
I lie to everybody that my father's dead,
I smell like Joop... my son has croup.
Picking up the hooker that I like the best,
Crying on her toilet cause my life's a mess
I'm sleeping in the office cause my wife's depressed
I'm heating streaky bacon in a trouser press

I am your dad's best friend, your dad's best friend
I'm taking him to Holland for the long weekend
He never had a stag, he never had a stag,
I'm taking him to Amsterdam and making him a man

Your dad's best friend, your dad's best friend,
We're doing ketamine up in the Netherlands.
And maybe when you've children of your own
You'll be praying for a best friend just like me.

Yay! Thanks unbearablylight, the ketamine was the one line I couldn't decipher.

This is oddly growing on me. Still not as catchy as Horse Outside, though.

Thanks unbearablylight!
Wow, I really like this. I think what make it interesting is that he's dad's best friend - that is, I get worried for Dad.

If you ever get a chance to see them live then take it. I saw them in Edinburgh last year and they were incredible

Unbearable. And I say this as someone who (according to iTunes) has listened to Horse Outside 212 times. A bag for me, a bag for you, let's get wrecked on bags of glue!

Give it a few days and a black mood, Admiral. It needs some time in the barrel to cure...

There's something about the raging, unhinged petulance of "He never had a stag!" that's perfect...
