Wow, I was just in missoula a few months ago and had no idea! This really is pretty cool.
One question: Can you do it for more than a single brief stretch of water where the conditions are absolutely perfect?

That section of river used to be a low-head diversion weir for irrigation built in the early 1900's. It had deteriorated to a tangled mess of concrete boulders and jagged rebar. In 2006 they took out all the hazards and replaced it with a surf park for kayaks, which later evolved into sharing with surfboards.

A surprising surf mecca is Hood River, Oregon. Wind Surfers love the place, because the current flows west and the prevailing wind blows east, so the water is choppy and you can go back and forth across the river all day and then get off right where you got on.

Missoula, Montana is like surfing the wee kiddy pool in Japan, except in Japan, they'll juggle for you at the same time.

You're right. If you can't surf giant, technical waves, you should never have any fun ever.

As someone who has caught 24 inch rainbow trout within sight of the Missoula surfers, all I can say about fly fishing Mavericks is . . . no.
