Growing up in a midwestern town in the 50's meant that one of my few exposures to African-American musical styling was when Ella Fitzgerald would perform on predominately white TV shows... Sadly, I remember viewing it as an oddity... it was so seldom that we saw black people on TV it was a bit difficult to parse if you were a 10 year old white kid.
But, even though there was a cultural/musical disconnect for me, there was never any doubt that Ms. Fitzgerald had a talent and style that was unique and unmatched.

Thanks for the post... I'll spend the next hour or so listening to Ella...

And then in the 50's there was also the "Is it live or is it Memorex" prime time TV commercial featuring Ella.

I think someone's Memorex needs a little splicing.

I think an early 50s home recording media commercial might not have set the bar as high as Memorex in the 70s:

"Is your radio broken, is is it a wire recording?"
